If it's something you really, really want the basic question is what is your chance of finding another? If you need to justify the purchase in your mind run the price backwards - Step 1 - deduct the cost of any "extras" that come with the tractor Step 2 - deduct the cost of any recent repairs or replacements that won't have to be redone Step 3 - deduct the cost of items that will not require your attention due to condition (eg - is the paint going to be OK, not requiring a repaint) Keep in mind this exercise is a justification - it really bears no resemblance to anything but convincing yourself (or perhaps others) that this is a good deal. At the end of the day if you are within a couple of hundred dollars pricewise and think you might be kicking yourself for letting it go just buy it. There are a lot of questionable things we spend a couple hundred dollars on over the course of a year that we don't even remember - owning the WH is something that you will always remember.. life is short, enjoy it.

"Mule drive" is a slang term (incorrect in this case) for a multiple groove pulley/sheave used to change the direction (not rotational direction though) of two or more belt runs between different shafts. The earlier gear drive WH decks are a good example. The three groove pulley on the end of the hitch shaft is turned by the PTO belt from the engine. That same pulley then turns the two smaller belts connected to the pulley on the deck cross shaft. Borrowed from a recent post: These things are actually called front idler support assemblies, or - as I prefer - deck drive belt tensioners: That version has been used to tension the mower deck drive belt on horizontal shaft garden tractors since the inception of the Attach-Matic hitch system in late 1972. The 60" deck did use a spring-loaded derivative, but the others were basically the same. The tensioner for the earlier 37" SD deck did use two V groove idlers instead of one V and one flat, but that was because of the unique six-sided belt. The rest of the assembly is the same. There's just something about a mule being a horse cross-breed that makes me not want to use that word around my tractors. :ychain:

Looks real nice Martin. I gotta be honest though, its looks a little more like a restoration to me than a quick redo. :ychain:

If you are going to go to all the trouble to tape and mask the tires, why not just take them off and get the rims sandblasted?

Perry! it is so nice of you to pick them up for me and install them on my tractor! They look very nice Kelly, some one will have a big smile on there face Sat night!

without really adding up what i have in the 1054, it would take more than $1000 and i think i would still be off 'breaking even'. i dont even think about the $ that are put into fixing them up. its a hobby and its relaxation and time out from a stressful job. i think its pretty safe to say youre never going to get rich in this hobby if you spend the time and money making them into a 'nice' tractor, especially if you really do everything..... i try to make the initial buy as cheap as possible, as i consider that cost to be the most critical. it really helps if the tractor is in nicer condition rather than a basket case too, as most of your $ is going to go into replacing parts that you just paid money for. most of those parts are going to be a hard sell if you dont want to use them, most others wont want to use them as well...... if its a really clean good running and complete tractor that you dont have to or want to spend $ on then i think 600-800 might be ok, its still on the high side, but you could be looking at a cheaper example that would run you up more than that to get it into decent running condition if you have to do tires, gas tank, some engine work and all the other parts that are usually needed on these models. then theres the body, the 953/1054 can really eat up the time and money fixing a rough body/frame assembly..... just make sure that if you are paying more for a good one, that you really check it out thoroughly......

Man, I must be gettin old. For me? Its Southern Rock whenever I have to wrench. Gimme some Lynerd Skynerd or some Molly Hatchett. Toss in some Marshall Tucker and some Blackfoot and I am a Happy boy. The ICING on the cake? Roll in some Outlaws, Ozark Mountain Daredevils, Allman Brothers(with Duane of course) and toss in some David Allen Coe and a touch of John Prine to finish it off. As far as country goes? If it was done after about 1985(IMO)? It ain't country... I had to use that date so I could get Rodney Crowell in there. Johnny Cash's X- son in law. C'Ya Bye

matt, the 1054 gearing with the 15" wheels make it faster than my 1057, so i gotta make sure that i have at least one nice looking tractor faster than jeanines....... i hope i still have enough low gearing in the 8 speed to work this thing as well..... :confusion-scratchheadblue:

Well no updates ATM Jake.. but it's soon coming some updates. Day 42 and I reckon the update pics may either show Lars riding the finished project around his Garden, or he's managed to Copy/Fab all the parts and built 2 of them :techie-hourglass:

I ran my tiller with a C120 and had plenty of power. I use the tiller to work my garden but also to till small food plots. I get a little impatient while tilling the plots (they take a while) and sometimes go a little too fast. I bet a 10 HP will work great. The additional HP doesn't help if you cant get it to the ground and what I have found is when you go too fast in hard ground the belt will slip long before you bog down the engine. Enjoy the "dirt slinging."

I took the "good" bearing on the opposite side out with a drift & hammer. It seems to be ok, I know it's a low-speed application, but I'm a "while you're in there" kind of guy, so I'll be replacing both. I even got a little uptight and replaced the grease zirk in the hub. I suppose I'm envisioning flawless, appliance-like reliability when I'm done doing a thorough once-over on the 'Horse. After 35 years, who knows what needs to be adressed, I was only really around the old gal for the last honest 22 years (I was born in '83), and only witnessed some of the butchery and shade-tree shenanigans of my father and grandfather.

Great find, and with all the pieces too!!! Don't worry about that B-100 having enough power to run it, it has MORE than enough to do the job. I'd love to have one, just have to keep beating the bushes.
