Learned something about hydros

Recommended Posts

New guy here. 244 h. Yeah I know... verticle drive shaft....

Local Deere dealer sold me a 244 h for a couple hundred bucks.

The transmission was jumpy. They didn't want to mess with it.

i noticed the release used for pushing the tractor around was pretty stiff.

Removed rear right wheel and found culprit.

The release valve was was half way open. Simple turn with wrench fixed the problem.

tractor can now sprint up my West Virginia yard.

Nice find! A 244-H may be a lawn tractor, but it's still built to last. Far better than the modern stuff you find at the big box stores. :handgestures-thumbupright:

Searching the "competition" sometimes turns up good deals -- they often want to move things that aren't "their" brand. I found a good deal on a Subaru for my daughter, sitting on a Chevy lot because of that. The local Subaru dealer's price on the same model, same year, with similar mileage was around 3K to 5K more. The Chevy dealer had taken it in trade and just wanted the Japanese car gone off the lot.

The large 2xx series WH are either very much under-appreciated, perhaps just mostly unknown or simply associated with the less capable smaller series.  I have several WHs and my 264H is my goto machine for mowing.

You did REAL good!  Silly dealer!

Two of my 5xi have come from JD dealers for very good prices. It seems they don't like to have the red "ripe" tractors around the green "un-ripened" equipment.  :D
