snowhound 103 #1 Posted March 25, 2015 The gear on the upper steering shaft of my 418-8 is worn is there any adjustment to the upper or lower steering shaft to take out some of the play? Ed
shallowwatersailor 3,213 #2 Posted March 25, 2015 If the support is wallowed out (a lot of PO owners never grease that spot) you can either try to bush it, or just simply replace the support. The steering shaft can be shimmed to take up the slack there. On one of my tractors that had this problem I used a 3/4" locking collar in place of the cotter pin on the end. I found that I could tighten the shaft better.
Don1977 604 #3 Posted March 25, 2015 The lower shaft is adjustable to tighten the steering gears. Some use shims behind the carter pin on the end of the shaft. Some later models had a castellated nut for adjustment. Also on the 300, 400, and 500 series tractors the upper bushing in the hood stand become loose and causes steering problems. The best fix is a #6472 flange bearing, it's the same bearing at the front of the lower shaft.
