trentcrouch 0 #1 Posted March 22, 2015 I need help with my 69 work horse 700. It is an electric start. When I tried jumping it, it wouldnt even turn over or anything at all. The crankshaft turned so it is not frozen up. Also I don't know what slots are which for shifting since the sticker is gone. Not sure what gear it would have to be in to start it. Racinbob 10,281 #2 Posted March 22, 2015 I'm not sure where to start on this one (pun intended ). Download the manual for it in the manuals section. It doesn't matter which gear it's in to start. Of course the clutch should be depressed when starting but there isn't a safety switch on it. It sounds like you have an engine problem. Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

Racinbob 10,281 #5 Posted March 22, 2015 (edited) Yea, what Chasm said. I read your post wrong when you said the crankshaft was turning. I thought it was cranking but not starting. Make sure all the connections are good then check to see if you're getting power to the S terminal with the ignition switch in the start position. If not you have a bad switch. trentcrouch 0 #6 Posted March 24, 2015 So I was able to crank the crank shaft like I said, but it only turned for a couple turns and then it would lock up. I turned it the opposite way a couple turns and same thing. I am getting power to my starter switch so I don't think there is anything wrong with that. I think it might be a locked up piston so Im gonna try pouring transmission fluid down into the spark plug hole and plug it back up. This way maybe it will loosen the piston up and I can crank it free. I havent gotten it to even turn over or anything so any other ideas? Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

gwest_ca-(File Mod) 10,499 #8 Posted March 24, 2015 If you can turn the crank more than 1 turn it is not the piston. Perhaps you have a stuck valve that is preventing a full 2 turns. Racinbob 10,281 #9 Posted March 24, 2015 Yes, it's 12 volts. I don't think the engine is locking up. It sounds like you're hitting the compression stroke and it just gets harder to turn over by hand. I wouldn't do the transmission fluid thing yet. Are you getting power to the S terminal on the switch with it in the momentary start position? I'm still thinking it's the switch. Rob R 951 #10 Posted March 24, 2015 You need to find out what's locking up the engine from turning before you do anything..... i.e. stuck valve or broken piston connecting rod..... you can take the plug out and with a drinking straw see if the piston is moving when you rotate the crank. You would have to pull the Head to see if a valve is stuck. I had one engine that the magnets on the flywheel came loose and the were jamming the flywheel. Take baby steps and eliminate the major items before you jump down the wrong path. Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

trentcrouch 0 #14 Posted March 29, 2015 Ok so I have got everything working but the threads on the spark plug were stripped so I fixed that. The adhesiveis setting overnight tonight. we had to take the head off and we also cleaned everything out. Hopefully tomorrow we can get it running. I need to find out where to buy tires for it though. Could anyone help on that?I believe they are 4.80/4.0 and it is a work horse 700. Also could anyone tell me what type of spark plug and what gap it needs? It came with a J-8 and gap was .25. Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
