My C-101

Recommended Posts

Horse46

I still haven't swaped the motors over as I am still unsure if the 16 is better than the 10. I have an oil leak which could be just a sump plug, need to check that, I have new sparking bits, no time to fit as yet. finger's crossed for Friday.
In the mean time I finaly decided that I am going to re fresh the 101, so on the weekend I removed the old decals. I know what you guys are like for original colour paint so I took a couple of pictures as they were coming off.

Bit of an up date.

I have removed the seat unit, rear arches, bonnet/hood and the cover over the gear stick and took them to work and sand blasted them, except the bonnet as it wouldn't fit in the cabinet, I will have to hand sand it.
Anyway got them all home and gave them 3 coats of red oxide, and I have just sanded them back ready for some hi build primer.
I hope to take the wheels in over the next couple of days and give them the same treatment.

The 16hp motor is still under going a good inspection before I make the decision to swap them out, it has an oil leak, but it is so mucky underneath I can't find from where it originates. I will have to get the jet wash out for further inspection.

Not much to see really so no pictures this time.

Oh forgot to mention, I went to my local car paint shop armed with the photo of the red paint, and came back with a tin of VW Tornado Red, it is bang on. :D

Spent the afternoon armed with a rattle can of high build primer and got the rear wheel cover done, the plate between the gears had a reaction so had to do that twice, and i have sanded and primed the hood, both sides.
Tomorrow hopefully get some high build on that too.

What kind of a finish would these tractors have had when they were new, could you see any imperfections in the panels?

I haven't found a trace of primer anywhere, what paint was it enamel, cellulose ?

I don't really want a car kind of finish because I want to use it, but I still want a nice shine.

I've spent ages sanding and priming but without the use of filler it's never going to be perfect.

I removed the foot boards, belt guard and opposite side, the front mule drive, ready to take to work to grit blast. It's not really needed but I did the same with the rear wheel arch cover and that has come out really nice, well in the primer it has.
It's a lot more work but hopefully it will payoff in the long run.

Thanks Ian, I can't wait to see it finished either.

I'm not looking for a full resto, but I want to be happy that I didn't skimp anything.

its in very good shape under the panels so I'll wax oil them and any other areas that may harbour moisture, should keep her going for a few years longer.

RE the finish when new - they were garden tractors and I've come across curtaining and even the odd run in the original paintwork, though usually where it's not too important. Re imperfections, all a matter of personal taste. Many restos end up probably better than new, concourse even. I like to leave the odd battle scar that's part of the tractor's history, and after a few years use the paint finish wears in anyway and it all looks 'authentic' for a 'worker'. Just my opinion. Looks like a good job you've done there.

Thanks Andy,i
I'm happy to leave the dent and the little marks because this is going to be used, I also thinks it adds a bit of authenticity. Besides I can't see me going to any events with it.
I'm never going to get a super shiny finish with rattle cans, as its to hard to keep it wet in a big enough area without getting runs or peel.
I'm hoping to get a bit done tonight, so watch this space, or the one I've started in the resto & mods section.

a couple of picks to liven up the euro section.
Hopefully fit the gasket tomorrow and get the motor in :woohoo:let's hope I haven't celebrated too early.

If that's all done with a rattle can then you have mastered the rattle can...LOOKS GREAT!
Are the front rims different colors?

Oops!

looks like a pit of piston skirt, as for the rolled pin?  I can't recall one in a kohler...

The pin may be a sump locating pin

Nice job with the paint. Inclined to agree with Andy on the merits of finish on a Garden Tractor.
Unfortunate with the bits found in the Oil Pan. As for the Roll Pin and not having a size comparison in your pic, the only Pins I know of inside Kohlers are the ones that retain Governor weights.

I have started a new thread in the engine section to get some help. The opinion of the pin is that of the governor, I have no idea what this looks like so I have to take everyones word for it.

For some better news, I reinstalled the 10hp for now so I can at least get some seat time on my newly painted pony.
:D

The piston looks intact Mark, and the bore, could it be possible that the governor weight broke up and fell down the engine without touching anything?
The con rod looks a tiny bit bent, my thoughts were maybe the tail struck the bits and broke off? Never that simple though eh!
The engine was running fine too, I was really surprised to find all this.

image.thumb.jpg.2c6d972cf5c2b1b7c4a2541eimage.thumb.jpg.fcdc369d82da6bea765bebfaI managed to get the tractor going tonight, not running properly, (needs choke on or it cuts out) but at least it runs. I had to strip the fuel pump though because the lever managed to release itself, so no vacuum.
Here is a pic of my new seat, very comfy with the back rest.
