Fordiesel69 214 #1 Posted September 20, 2014 Theory, assuming the rings are not stuck or jammed up with carbon, but are very worn and have razor sharp edges, does this accelerate wear on the cylinder? Finally tore down a 1100 or so hour M12, and the rings were worn badly, but not stuck or carboned up.
Geno 1,928 #2 Posted September 20, 2014 If the ring can move in the grove, absolutely. If it's tight in the grove it won't, it's just ring wear. How's the cylinder wall look?
Fordiesel69 214 #3 Posted September 20, 2014 Was a nice oil burner and a td low on power, but thankfully no knocks. Rings were completely worn, but wall is **JUST** within spec. By the time it reaches 2000 hrs this engine will require a rebore. There are 4 scratches in the cyl near the hottest part (exhaust). It looks like the oil ring at one time may have been stuck. Geno 1,928 #4 Posted September 20, 2014 If you think it will go that far you may just hone it and rering it. Using synthetic oil may go a long way in how long it lasts after that also. How long have you had it?
Fordiesel69 214 #5 Posted September 20, 2014 Got it with a 312-8 classic back in late spring. Pulled it right away and replaced with a spare as the smoke screen was too bad to use. I will do just that and I plan to always run shell rotella T1 SAE 30. It is a great oil. Changed every 25 hrs it will still look new.
Geno 1,928 #6 Posted September 20, 2014 Last people must not have taken care of it. If you rering it it should last you a long time.
