jf31276 0 #1 Posted June 12, 2013 Hi everyone just wanted to say hello just got my first wheel horse it is a 1970 raider 10. was wondering if anyone was from south jersey and could help with getting my horse up and running it will start with starting fluid but wont stay running. i took apart the carb and cleaned it waiting on a carb rebuild kit
chazm 412 #2 Posted June 12, 2013 to R/S , I know we have some jersey members, they'll be along shortly. Sounds like you started in the right place to rebuild the carb. ifs been sitting for awhile ,let the card soak in cleaner , blow out with air. Replace gas filter & fuel lines as well & see what happens after that chasm
raider10-8 9 #3 Posted June 12, 2013 if you put the carb rebuild kit in and it dosent do much. change or clean the spark plug. other wise there not much to do but what he said^.
jimt1971 236 #5 Posted June 12, 2013 Techy always need points and condensers.
KC9KAS 4,741 #6 Posted June 12, 2013 I wouldn't use too much starting fluid on my engines...Not that good on the cylinder walls when the oil get washed off of the walls.
jf31276 0 #7 Posted June 12, 2013 well after a little more tinkering got it started and running but it was really ruff. need to get new throttle cable also
Jeff-C175 7,195 #8 Posted June 12, 2013 How far south? Does 'cmch' mean something like Cape May County? ...general area is fine if you don't want to 'advertise' to the general public. Does the machine have a fuel filter in line? Change that. You also may have deteriorated rubber fuel lines... If there was fuel in the tank, dump it and start fresh. You've changed the oil, yes? Was what came out 'normal' looking? or like 'chocolate milk' ? If you got chocolate milk it means there was some water in the oil. Happens when stored outdoors. You may need to change it a couple times before you get it all out. Did you get a hood with the machine?
jf31276 0 #9 Posted June 12, 2013 Yes I do have hood just off so I could get to the carb easier The guy I got it from said he had it serviced and it was running three years ago. I did check the oil and it looked good. I am in Cape May Courthouse New Jersey which is exit 10 gsp
Jeff-C175 7,195 #10 Posted June 12, 2013 That's a little far for me ... I'm up by 114 ... Tellya what though, get the carb kit, take your time and clean it out real good and see how it goes.
JamesBe1 80 #11 Posted June 13, 2013 Welcome to Red Square! Sounds like the carb is the best place to start. I can of berrymans is fairly cheap. I would take the carb apart and soak it overnight before you rebuild it. All of the rest of the suggestions are pretty much spot on perfect. Sounds like it is likely a fuel problem. But, a new spark plug won't hurt. You might want to clean up the points while you are at it. Anyhow, good luck and let us know how it turns out. jf31276 0 #12 Posted June 13, 2013 seems like my tecumseh does not use points SOLID STATE IGNITION. The Tecumseh solid state ignition system does not use ignition breaker points. The only moving part of the system is the rotating flywheel with charging magnets and trigger pins. Other components of system are ignition generator coil and stator assembly, spark plug and ignition unit.
jf31276 0 #15 Posted June 13, 2013 where can i find throttle and choke cable part numbers
Jeff-C175 7,195 #16 Posted June 13, 2013 Sounds to me like you got it running pretty good! Is that with the carb kit installed? Or did it just start running good all by itself? where can i find throttle and choke cable part numbers I'm not real hip to all the different model numbers... is there a plate with the model number just below the dash? With that number you can pull up parts diagrams at a number of different sites. I'm sure that you can probably also find an aftermarket cable that will work. Have you found the "Manuals" section of the website yet? This may not be for your year, but this is an example of what you can find there:
Jeff-C175 7,195 #17 Posted June 13, 2013 Wow... throttle cable in that parts list (if it's the right one for your machine) is around $50 ! (part number 101834 used on many years/models) I'm SURE you can find a universal replacement and if yours only needs a new wire, just pull that from the replacement and use it on yours... unless something else is broke. I bet one of the guys on board has one kicking around on a parts horse they might be willing to spare... What's wrong with yours? Maybe this is all you need? http://www.jackssmallengines.com/Products/Universal/Throttle-Control-Cables/Throttle-Conduits-Clips/295071/55977/s If you have a lawn supply house near you, they usually sell the wire by the foot,
jf31276 0 #18 Posted June 13, 2013 it took about 1hour of adjusting carb and throttle placement. my throttle cable does not lock
JamesBe1 80 #19 Posted June 14, 2013 What do you mean by your throttle cable locking?
jf31276 0 #20 Posted June 14, 2013 it is a pullout and twist to lock it in place the speed setting
Jeff-C175 7,195 #21 Posted June 14, 2013 I'm thinking that the throttle cable you have may not be original...
