Tankman 3,520 #1 Posted December 13, 2012 A neighbor has, in excellent condition an 18hp Kohler Magnum. Would this engine swap into my '88 414-8? Anything I should be aware of? He's asking for $450.00, runs good without smoke or knocks. Sounds great. Opinion on price?
smoreau 658 #2 Posted December 13, 2012 I have one in my 90 520h that fit great. You will need a mounting plate from a onen or a KT17 to fit it correctly. here is a pic
Tankman 3,520 #3 Posted December 13, 2012 Smoreau, thanks for the reply. The 520 looks great. Are the mounting plates readily available? One more small question. I have 23x8.5x12 rear tires/rims. Can I use the same rims for 23x10.5x12 Ag tires?
smoreau 658 #4 Posted December 13, 2012 You can find them on flee bay and a onen mounting plate will work, but you half to drill the right side holes in the plate and frame. The plate has the mount for the pto clutch hoop. You may need a 520 hoop also to make the clutch work right. I have to say that I am really happy with mine and prefer it over the onen in this 520. Tankman 3,520 #5 Posted December 13, 2012 I can see in your image, the PTO hoop in the plate. "The plate has the mount for the pto clutch hoop. You may need a 520 hoop also to make the clutch work right." The rest seems easy enough. Thanks for the input!
Wheel-N-It 2,971 #6 Posted December 13, 2012 Tankman, this sounds like a great Winter project. I'm with you all the way for this swap!
pfrederi 18,378 #7 Posted December 13, 2012 Be sure and check out the spec number of the motor. Only some magnums came with the thrust bearing and washer that you need to have if you are using a manual PTO. Magnum twins did not have ball bearing for teh crank shafts, only sleeve bearings. WH specd addition of a Thrust bearing to handle the end loading of the crankshaft by a Manual PTO
Tankman 3,520 #8 Posted December 13, 2012 The label on the engine is a bit difficult to read. Model looks like M180S or M18QS. Most likely the zero. Spec Number is 24665 where might I find if this engine has the thrust bearing? :eusa-think:
pfrederi 18,378 #9 Posted December 13, 2012 (edited) My reading of the Kohler Parts manuals for Magnum twins says it does not have the thrust bearing. Looks like the engine came from an American Yard Products machine. . Look up the spec # at the Kohler web site then look at crankcase. The thrust bearing is item 25...not shown as being on your motor. I put a John Deere KT-17 on my C-175, I had to switch to an electric PTO as it didn't have thrust bearing either. You may also find that the choke works backwards as well as having issues with the exhaust system and clearance with the hood. You can easily find the manifolds you might need on ebay Edited December 13, 2012 by pfrederi
pfrederi 18,378 #10 Posted December 14, 2012 Need to add that you may find it necessary to drill tap some holes in the engine end plate for PTO mounts and belt guides
