953 nut 51,541 #207 Posted June 16, 2016 My familiarization with Wheel Horses started about '56 or so, don't remember the year for sure. Dad took me to a garden show when I was about eleven years old and we looked a lots of walk-behind and riding garden tractors. We kept on coming back to the little RED one and I was sure I would be riding in style. As it turned out he bought a walk behind rototiller and I did a lot of walking. Fast forward forty years; my wife and I bought some property for a future home site and I needed something a lot better than the MTD riding mower to tame the wilderness. One of my co-workers and I attended the Florida Flywheelers show and I looked at several garden tractors; when I saw a I was telling my friend about that early encounter and how I wished we had gotten it, his response was "now is the time"! I bought the good running 1055 with a 36" mower, mid-mount grader blade and a cart for $350. While we were there I also picked up a dozer blade and turning plow. I had a ball with it! A short time later the same co-worker was in Ohio visiting family and I saw a 953 on that was appealing to me; called him and he said it was only a few miles away and his truck would be empty coming back. I also was checking this thread looking at the old names, some aren't active no more. Perry, Stephen, Elliot, Kevin, Rod, just a few of the names who are either inactive or hadn't visit the site in a while. It's good to reminisce, but also it's sad in a way. Our propriety is to small for a big tractor, and these small tractors will zip trough every small opening. They gladly help us on every job, small or big! You may say, okay a small tractor. But why WH? Well because of it's history, proven reliability and fixability. I buy them all in pretty bad shape, I love fixing them up, It is a real pleasure, the first time you start it and drive off. You never ever want to come off. And their modularity makes me fab up all kinds of stuff. I learned a lot from my horses and they made a big impact on my youht. So I will never let them go! 8ntruck 6,358 #212 Posted December 4, 2021 (edited) I'm not really a collector of Wheel Horses, rather (borrowing a term from the toy train hobby) an operator. Only have two of them, and they both are workers. I inherited the first one with the house from my wife's parents. I've known and used that tractor since the early 80's. My brother in law took it in trade for some work and ended up with my father in law by immenant domain. It is used mostly for mowing and yard work. The second one I just got this summer. It had been sitting in a field since not long after the turn of the century. The guy I brought it from got it just hours before the scrap man did. It is a work in progress. It is running and driving, but still has a long to do list to get it to where I want it. Ultimately, it will end up working in our woods in Ky.
