Wasn't Looking But Had to Buy It !!

Recommended Posts

stevebo

I wasn't looking and got a call from Dad and my cousin as they both passed by this one on the side of the road. I waiting a few days then decided to take a look since I was close. It cleaned up very nicely. Runs mint and is a keeper since it is so clean. This is the FIRST silver decal 310 with red grill I have seen. As far as I can tell this was never repainted and not a spec of rust.

According to the original paperwork that came with it the original owner purchased this in 1985 which I am 99.9% sure is the first year of this model. It even has the original key chain from the tractor barn which was another wheelhorse dealer in Brookfield, CT. He sold it because the mower deck went bad and after pricing out a new one at the dealer he decided to buy a craftsman lawnmower and used this one just to pull a garden cart. He replaced the pto disk and brake pad. Only came with the front mule drive.

Ken,

You know me.. I may be tempted to do the spiindle swap out and install the shorter spindles and upgrade the fronts to 8 inch wheels and I have a nice set of 10.50's mounted on rims (thanks to Sparky). On the other hand I think it should stay as is and be on yard cart duty...

i swapped my spindles and wheels on my red hood too,a couple of years back we had a disscusion on the reasoning behind the red hoods, some say because they were box store units, which isnt the case for mine as it came from the dealer direct, was it cheaper to not paint the hood and the silver decals were cheaper also,it seems that only 308 and 310 were red hoods, these were cheaper machines and when i bought my 308 in 1986 it was cheaper than other models of wheelhorse, any thoughts out ther or anyone really know why?

If Im remembering this correctly the 310-8 red hoods came in 1985 and the 308-8 red hoods came in 1986. I have tried to find out what the red hoods are all about and have come up with nothing. They seem to be a very plain Jain mower ( no rear lift, no deck hight adjustment, no gauges or hour meter) but still a Wheel Horse true and true. I have one in the shop that Im redoing and was able to work with Vinalguy on decals for it, so for those out there that needs them he can hook you up.

Steve that is a very nice clean machine you have there :woohoo:
