juice on both sides?

hi i have a 310 8 and i wired it to the kohler diagram and when i turn on the switch juice ends up on both sides of the coil the whole time:help:

this is normal for a coil. You have probably caught the points in an open state and the negative (-) side of the coil is still at the same potential as the positive (+) side.

It is when the points close that the - side of the coil is temporarily grounded.

If you are using an analog meter, the voltage on the negative side my not be fully at battery voltage.

If you are using a digital meter , the voltage at the - side will be only slightly less than battery voltage.

This is due to the internal resistance differences of the analog vs digital meters.

Give me a little time tonight and I'll see if I can illustrate this with a diagram.

it has juice on the negative side points open or closed so im unsure and it has no spark???? sorry for not being clearer before

Ignition switch in off position

Unfasten the + side coil wire from the coil

Attach one ohmmeter lead to the (-) side of the coil.

Hook the other ohmmeter lead to an engine ground.

Turn the engine over by hand.

At some point within 2 complete rotations of the engine, the ohmmeter should show a direct short to engine ground.

If not,

1/ your points are not closing or are extremely pitted

2/ your wiring from the points to the coil (-) post is open
