Front implement belt alignment and pulley tension help needed

Recommended Posts

JoeM

Even a cloth belt would have a good bit of wear resistance. Sounds like slippage?

A good spring cantilevered take up would keep it running proper tension and minimal slip.

The one nice thing about a spring take up you can always put on a heavier spring or two.

Cogged belts are a good candidate for this application, not so good if used as a clutching mechanism. They have lots of bite.

They are noisy but you are running a chipper! You will never hear it.

After reading the info from all you folks I'd agree.

I'll get some tightenin' on it and see what we come up with.

@cafoose  referring to your pulley function set up , found those angular drive points really cook those , very often small sealed bearings . that led my to the green stuff, realize it only enhances the issue . but whenever I  can , pop off bearing side shields , and go  lucas , x tra heavy duty . used to have whining  pto mule drive bearings . all of my decks and drives , are lucas lubed ,560 drop point ,anti sling , grease. eliminate a failure , pete

Sometime in the week, I would also recommend calling V-belt guys, and seeing if they have any recommendations for you. THEY ARE AWESOME!!!

Also, Eric, what KIND of v-belt are you using, the blue ones from tractor stores? You might want to try a Bando belt in there, as opposed to an el-cheapo tractor store belt.

V-belt guys knumber is :

Good advice and much appreciated.

No cheap belts here.

I used Gates green on this chipper.

Might order a Gates rubber belt.

I do have a couple (Brown/Browning?) Brand belts here too.

All of those sound like good belts, @ebinmaine... I do think rubber would be the first thing to try before getting too technical with it...

Can you pick one up at a car parts dealer, like O'reilly's...? :confusion-confused:

My local O'reilly's has all kinds of rubber cogged belts...

There ain't any "local" parts store on Sunday.

Well folks I started addressing this beast again today.

I tightened up one of the LH mounting bolts and replaced the other.

Lifted the front of the machine a little with the floor jack and adjusted the belt tensioner pulley as tight as I could get it with my own lifting strength.

@JoeM I think it was you mentioned about an inch of deflection in this belt.

It's an 86" belt so there's 43" minus pulley diameters for flex. It's a pretty fair 1" I'd say.

Took it out for a shakedown.

Definitely better operating.

I'll get some time on it and see how the belt wears.

That may work. Something like parachute cord or mule tape is what I use.

That may work, but I hate packing my parachute back up…

Thanks.
Them big tires make a  Huge difference in capability of movement through the forest.

The belt is... Better.
I tightened it up for all I could lift. Deflection is certainly less.
I won't know if I've solved it til I get some run time.
