Had an afternoon for a parts procurement trip to a friend's junkyard. 

This odd lil fella was just sitting there.

A 4way of sorts I presume .

It's looking like 10" needs to be removed from each side to make it the correct usable width.

Getting ready to narrow things down a bit.

Revised measurements say the pinion is off center so recalculated is in order.

 

Also an unforeseen obstacle of there being a double step up/down in the axle tube.

The rear axle narrowing is going somewhat according to plan.

 

It won't be long and I'll have a rolling chassis.

Halfway there.

I put the shaft in the lathe to spin test.

It spun out nicely. 

Maybe the other half later today.

Interesting process.  I have the rear axle out of a Monza Spider that is slated to go into a MGB with an Olds 215.  It will need to get narrowed.  Nice to see the process you are using. 

 

How are you keeping all of the bearing centers in line?

 

How are you going to shorten the axles?

Sounds like a cool little project you have going.

 

As far as keeping the bearing centers in line welllllll.......

 

With this being a fairly modern housing I'm hoping the factory tolerances were close enough that the axle tubes were round,squared, and centered.

Because all I did was make sure what I did was squared and centered. 

 

I did tack weld the axle end on then tacked my axle shaft together. Then I fit it back into the housing to make sure it slid together.

 

Lastly, clamped everything in place and alternated my welds.

 

You can see in the 3rd picture back that I overlapped the axle shaft halves the beveled all my edges. Again clamped in place and alternated my welds. Not letting it get to hot in the process.

 

For the amount of torque and horse power I will have it should be adequate.

It's resting in its forever home now.

Maybe some mounts later today along with some shock relocation brackets.

You should do the same thing with a driven steer axle and make it 4 wd. It looks like you certainly have the skills.

That's not a bad idea. I could always use a WH transaxle for the transmission/transfer case.

Maybe on an upgrade.

There is a local guy that buys and sell quite a few of them.

I have a buddy that just picked up 2 Harley Davidson trike carts.

They are a lot of fun to work on and modify but I can't justify having one anymore. I actually used mine to go off roading with. They were fun but had potential much more suited to dunes. If I ever did build another cart, it would be for Silver lake sand dunes and nothing else. Richie on here built one with a motorcycle engine awhile back.

They are quite a simple design which does make them easy to work on.

Unfortunately we don't have dunes around here. Wish we did.

I tried 😂 it got kinda complicated with the engine/transmission setup I was using. Would have probably killed me if I ever got it together. 30 forward speeds, 6 reverse   I’ll stick with tractors at this point.

I remember, you were off to a good start. I wish I could find the video of the EZGO that had a GXSR motor in it.

Oh ya I won't have to worry about breaking anything on the rear. I hope.

My C141D, atv tires are softer then a AG, and are made to fit on 7" wide rims, even 12" wide.
