So a friend of mine picked up a 857 the guy had to jump start it off his jeep and it started up and ran fine. He gets it home and hooks up a spare battery on jumper cables to start it and he smoked his wires trying to start it thats when he noticed the battery was hooked up for negative as positive i pulled the wire schematic and it shows positive as positive so rewired a spare battery i had cleaned up all the switches and posts and wire ends it started up but real slow ran fine after shut it off was cleaning up went to start it and nothing go figure this is a k181 with generator starter which look original except the engine is not i believe for one its grey lol spec number is 305360 could rotation be opposite hence wiring it up as negative as positive im stumped

Engine turns clockwise looking at the flywheel screen. Check all of you wires. That is a high amp circuit. I have seen the wires melt at the switch terminals. Also clean all ground contact points including where the generator  mounts.

:WRS:           You may want to begin with replacing the three large cables, battery, starter and ground. They ar probably all quite old and could be corroded inside.

The belt could also be a good place to invest a couple $. The belt should be raw rubber edged, not fabric wrapped Here is a list of numbers.

232613 Kohler belt nla Use 231605

232613 - Gates 7320 .41"x32.58" 36 degree or Napa 25-7320 .41"x32.58" 36 degree

231605 - Gates 7315 .41"x32.08" 36 degree or Napa 25-7315 .41"x32.08" 36 degree
