the M terminal magnito was wired into the rectifier🤷‍♂️ but the the two wires coming out of the stator weren’t hooked up just dangling.

At least it wasn't doing any harm.

Will a weak ground cause the starter to turn slowly?

Yes

Use your jumper cables. Black lead to battery - (neg) other end to engine ground. Preferably on the starter itself.

Red jumper cable lead to battery + (pos) to the terminal on starter. This should at least test your starter. As long as the switch is installed correctly, and the rest of the wiring is correct, and the switch is off, it will not start.

Until you have a chance to check the wiring carefully and completely, it may be best to disconnect the PLUS cable from the tractor to battery while doing this.

Where do you order Stens parts?

I typically get my stuff here

http://www.psep.biz/store/electrical_mower.htm

and order a bunch of stuff at a time like coils of cable and conduit for controls, switches, those switch connectors, filters etc etc

I've done just that. Also plop the Sten's part number into the interwebs search.

I'm a wicked cheap .... Guy.

I've saved substantial funds for a few minutes searching... And also wasted a little too much time saving next to nothing.

Replace switch with 103990.  73 had an accessory position on  the switch. Wire it up as a 103990

Ok ,got her all wired up and running.Have a little problem where the starter won’t always engage on the first try.

I know the starter is good.I  disassembled it, cleaned up the windings, still was in good shape with minimal wear and would turn over every time when on the bench .

I can hear the solenoid click each time I turn the key but doesn’t always engage the starter, usually will turn over the second or third turn of the key.

It is a original solenoid so I’m just guessing this may be the problem ?

The new Stens Ignition wired up great and I wired it as suggested by Squonk .

Replaced the battery cables too and cleaned up the surface to ground on the tractor.Could this be a symptom of a solenoid on the way out ?

One other question ,how should I wire up the PTO ? Like this in the diagram ?

Sorry for all the questions,I’m new to all this Wheel Horse fun .

Thanks for all the info.I hope I’m able to give back in some way here.

Never apologize for questions.

We all learn new things every day by doing just that.

Just by making this thread you've given back in way because you're issues and resolution will be documented.

As to the solenoid, I have had one here that definitely made a click noise, sounded fine, and wouldn't transmit power.

It can happen.

Replace the solenoid and make sure where it mounts is clean so it grounds well.

@Wheelhorse#1

Double check your own solenoid.

Should be 2 large terminals and 1 small.

If you want to get one at a parts store tell them you need it for a '79 Ford f250 or an old Jeep with 3 terminals.
