I looked at that manual. I could not find any corresponding numbers to identify the engine. Maybe because it was made for Sears?

I love that guys can come together and figure this all out. Younger guys just are not like that where im from. If the valves are moving freely, any reason to pull breather/lifter cover?

SSI can fail or be burned up.  If the tractor isn't running but cranks has compression  it was probably parked due to SSI failure.

Personally, I have never seen a 10 HP Tecumseh. (been looking for one though) I don't know if they all had Solid State Ignition or not.

Also check for debris behind your flywheel as best you can.

If it has a charging system it has SSI If it was a rope start it had a different system.

Good point.  The manual doesn't show an S/G as an option.  Who knows the air shroud may have been swapped in so can't be sure what model the engine really is.  It looks like a collection of stuff...

The green S/G was obviously added. It may have had one previously, but who knows. If it were originally rope start, could there be a coil (although unused) under the flywheel?

Almost anything would be possible

IT ?  What is IT ? Intake valve?  Exhaust valve? Pour a little light weight oil (MMO) in there and work IT IT will free up. It appears you have the flywheel off, I think. Any magnets in the flywheel, either on the outside or the inside? Any trigger pins located on the outer edge of the flywheel?

If the spark plug wire is coming from it, that's the coil. Pic isn't too clear to me.

This morning i drained the black sludge, added 20% lucas high mileage and 15-20 the rest. I keep using a rope on the outside pulley and it turns over but has a rough spot. And just now as you read this, i dribbled a small amount of gasoline in the spark hole. Pulled my rope and she ran!!!!

Does this thing have notches for a rope AND a V for a belt on the pulley?

Is there a V in the pulley, or did someone simply stick a belt into the rope groove?
