Kohler 14 and 16 question...

Recommended Posts

Ok, so I picked up what I think/thought is a C-160 8 speed today.   I got it home and noticed that it only has 9 head bolts.   My question is,  do ALL K341's have 10 head bolts? There is no shroud tag so that's no help either.  I can't speak to the originality of the tractor so I can't say if it's ever been swapped or not.

But the weird thing is...I tore down a basket case GT14 a month or so ago...took the engine apart and noticed the block had K341 cast into it.  Didn't really think twice about it until today when I went and looked at it again and IT has 10 head bolts.  I can't speak to the originality of that tractor either, but tend to think that motor was original to the tractor.

So....

1).  Do all K341's have 10 head bolts or were some made with 9?

2).  Did any K321's come with 10 head bolts or was a 16HP swapped into the GT14 at some point in it's life?

Trying to sort this out...

Thanks

I'm no expert, but I'm betting on 10 bolts for the 341...

I know Kohler used K301 castings for some K241 and even some M10 engines. It's not unusual to see K301 embossed at the PTO shaft. Maybe they did something similar between 14 and 16hp blocks?

All of the 16hp blocks I’ve seen are different than the 10-12-14 blocks. Again this is only the ones I’ve seen, not saying it is a rule.

16’s have this notch in the cooling fins in my experience.

Taking the head bolt count out of the equation, am I correct in saying that if I took the head off and measured the bore and stroke,  that would tell me for sure?

If that's the case, what is the bore and stroke for a 16hp?  or 14, 12, 10 for that matter?

Thanks so much!!!
