repowering a 520-H

I'm sorry I wasn't clear.  The only reason I mentioned the v-twin is it seemed earlier you were recommending it as a step up from the Duromax single cylinder engines..  I have a c-165 swinging a 48" mower deck.  I only need 16 hp.  Of the 16 hp, which would you prefer, the Duromax or the carrolstream?  And I realize hp and displacement only have a generally proportional relationship, but geesh, 420 cc vs 588?  I assume the cheaper ones are higher compression?

Did all of that help/answer your question there Chip?

I should add... the cc ratings on these engines are often bloated to make it look like 1 is more potent than the other. There is no noticeable difference in power between the engines...

Will I be disappointed with power comparison to the K341?  Will it spin the 48" deck?

I've mowed using a 48 with a 10hp Kohler. It struggled, but does work. For "little issue with most lawns" with a 48 deck, I would suggest 14hp.

The Carrol Steam engine looks like a Honda clone. If it genuinely even approaches 16hp, you should be fine.

No. You won't be disappointed. Other guys have had pretty good success with these swaps. It will definitely spin your deck. CC is relevant, but these engines make the same horsepower, formula for which is torque multiplied by rpm. Even though these engines are built differently, they make the same power. After break-in, you may feel more power than you K341.

You should have very good results.

Awesome!  Looks like I'm buying a Carrol Stream (if they're in stock).  Placing my order today!

One more thing that might be helpful for you to think about with power output

Kohler 341 compression ratio: 7.4:1

Carroll Stream 16 horse compression ratio: 8:2:1

Generally, higher compression ratio yields more power. The Carroll Stream engine has higher combustion efficiency. More power with less fuel.

I guess the best way to put it Chip, in English, is that the 420 engines of today make the same power, just in different ways...

CC of K 341 is equaled-out in other ways by modern engine manufacturers... (i.e. technology).

Yeah, you put these engines on the dyno... they basically perform the same. Just built differently.

They will sound pretty different too!

I haven’t priced them lately but I think Maxtool in California has a good price and free shipping on their engines. I got an electric start 16 hp for a golf cart a few years back.

No doubt . OHV and light weight for a favorable power to weight ratio. You don’t have to convince me, I have a few clone powered pieces of equipment.

Yeah, the offers still look good, as do those on Amazon, etc.

You can even buy Duromax engines at Lowes now, (some Lowes physically have them, some you can order in-person at the store or online).

I don't because if I did have a lowes card, it would probably be maxed out...:hide:

I did my mother's 1990 520H with a Honda GX630 kit from Repower Engine Replacement kits. They have complete kits for most Wheel Horses and many other tractors. Kit come with everything needed including wiring harness and exhaust. Rather expensive but cheaper than a new piece of crap tractor you get today. That 520H cut 4 acres of grass for 25 years with that Onan and a 60" deck, but now is semi retired. Here is the link to their site. Best of luck on which ever path you take.https://repowerspecialists.com/collections/wheel-horse/products/wheel-horse-520-with-onan?variant=6979132817431

CarrolStream doesn't have the 3 amp charging coil engine in stock... they have the 18 A.   Just checking in case I have a blind spot, but it shouldn't matter, correct?  Either engine will work without further alteration?

Absolutely. The 18 A is much better for accessories, including lights, etc... and will charge your battery fully. The 3 amp is... insufficient, in my humble opinion.

One more thing I would add here, is that the 18hp electric Duromax only charges at 1-3 amp at 3600 rpm. You are getting a much better charge coil, Chip.

And, although you may know this already, Chip, please be sure to always use mobil-1 10-30 in this engine. No cheapies...
