Economy tractor being ignored?

Recommended Posts

Handy Don

Saw this Economy #2786 sitting in the "yard" of a now-defunct plant nursery not far from home. The place has been out of business for a couple of years now and while I'd seen the machine sitting there, it didn't register for me until a week ago that it might be a real machine and not some cobbled up yard art (other things near it are faux Greek statues and fountains).

Engine cowl is missing and the unique anti-theft (?) device is a signpost planted between the axle and the (bent) front tie rod.

What caught my eye up close are the two levers for independent rear wheel brakes. To stop straight I guess you steer with your feet while pulling on the brake levers.

Thought it might be of interest.  If someone wanted to pursue acquiring it, PM me and I'll let you know where it is.

I’d try to acquire it before someone tries to scrap it. The only other kind of small tractor I have other then Wheel Horse is an Economy Jim Dandy. I’m the third owner, I bought it in 1985 and I believe it’s a 1962 although I’m not sure. It’s been sitting in my basement for almost 25 years. Several people have tried to buy it but it’s on my restoration list so I really don’t want to sell it.

That is a project for sure but well worth saving.  Economy has a big following around NC, see them at most shows.

Wow. Much older than I'd have guessed.

Another dead give-a-way to it's age is the hand brakes. :auto-swerve:

There is a big Economy/Power King get together every August in Portersville Pa. They usually get between 20 or 30 tractors. I would go but it's week before my steam show and there is too much going on to do both. Also my Loader tractor doesn't fit on my trailer! :helmet:

This sort of thing is way out of my league and area of interest.

I'm hoping someone will express interest and grab it. It doesn't seem hopelessly deteriorated :).

Know anyone on the lookout for a '53 that needs some help? Send them my way and I'll lead them to the one that's just sitting.

I have had 3-4 of them over the years and are great machines. Push snow like nothing!

1959 Country Squire, with Wisconsin engine. Were made on same assembly lines as Economy, Power King. Along with Red E, and smaller version Jim Dandy.
