The flip up fenders are so much easier, but it never fails that I try and push the tractor with the seat flipped up and destroy the bottom edge of it in the wheels.

Here’s my C-160 I got for free, yup FREE! An older gentleman had it for over thirty years and told me that he wanted it to go to a good home. He lives a few towns over from me and heard that I collected them. This was almost three years ago and the funny thing is that he just contacted me two days ago and said he was looking at possibly buying a C-160 8 speed! He wanted to know if I would help him work on it. Of course you guys know the answer to that question!!!

They are headlight stems, someday I’m going to put headlights on them!! I need to find period correct and proper size lights.

Got her home. I surprised at how well it runs. The guy said it had been sitting for a year.

The weights are indeed iron. Old Bolens and are much heavier than I expected for their size.

Also have about 25 years of maintenance records and original manuals in a binder. This thing is pretty unbelievable.

Never seem a tractor in person that still had the cover on.  I don't think the cover served any real purpose; maybe to keep your left leg from contacting the hydraulic valve that can get pretty warm after hours of mowing.  I'm sure it's fine to remove it, but don't throw it away if it's in good shape.

Just like I thought, she's pretty clean under all the grime. Here's after the first pressure washing and decreasing

This is my first hydro. The forward/reverse stick doesn't seem to want to go very far forward. Much less than the reverse. Is that normal? I didn't want to just force it.

Does she go faster in forward than in reverse (she should).  Does it creep when you have the motion control in neutral or when you have stepped on the brake pedal?? If it does look in the Owners Manual at the "Neutral adjustment"

Making progress.

Today got it stripped down for further deep cleaning and repairs. 

 

Installed the clevis kit and got that working great. While doing that I found that the brass bushing and c clip for the lift bar were missing, and the bar was just hanging by the chain.

The replacement for the broken pedal came in and got that swapped out.

Found one of the missing knobs. The choke knobs had was in the 6 inches of nasty grass under the tunnel cover. Popped it back on and that's one less thing to find.

The new seat and decal set both shipped today and should be here in a couple days. Got the missing bushing ordered. 

 

Need to find a plug for the tail light, a complete headlight, a hood latch knob still, and get some ags for the rear.

 

Also need to get the front wheels re-done and get the new rubber mounted.

 

I'm so excited with how nice this tractor is turning out.

It was going slight faster forward and was creeping. Seems to be a lot better after getting all the packed in debris out from the area in the middle where all the shifter workings are. It was packed with about 6" of garbage.

Hose it down and get everything wet. Spray it down with degreaser and let it soak for 20 or so minutes. Pressure wash it off.

Repeated that 3 times.

 

After that I use an automotive soap to clean off any residues.

 

Finish it off with a cleaner wax.

I refreshed a C-161 last summer. Degreased ... power washed.... repeat.... then a few hours with a tooth brush getting every little nook and cranny. Removed the shaker mounts, new decals... came out beautiful, wish I kept it.

Take a step or two back on delicate stuff. The pressure drops off pretty quick at distance.

 

I also might be concerned if it was a frequent occurrence, but it's not. I haven't done the fluid changes yet, so any water contamination will be gone. Be mindful of where water can get in (intake, exhaust, oil filter seal, drain, ect) and don't hammer those area with water. The same is true behind the dash. Everywhere else, let her rip.

 

I take that back, it will cut soft rubber so watch the hoses, tires and belts too at distances of <1'

Excellent explanation. Well worded. 

 

These tractors are made of good old fashioned iron for the most part. 

 

If it opens, close it and avoid it.

(Gas, oil or transmission fillers.)

 

If it plugs in, also avoid it. You can lightly spray the wires but avoid hard pressure at the ends of any wire. 

 

Loose paint WILL fly off. That's kind of ok though because it shows where the rust is.

Beautiful work on that so far. 

Glad to see you got the transmission exterior cleaned up. Seems to be an oft forgotten but very important task. 

I've got some chrome wire clips to hold wire to frame if you'd like any added or replaced.
