Found a couple of photos from years ago.  My sister was walking over to my place and this guy was sitting on the neighbours fence ( the hawk that is).

After most of a raw chicken breast, he was quite happy to know us.  Ended up taking to a wildlife rehab place, they thought he was kicked out of the nest.

Two hungry European Starlings let their guard down when they found our bird feeder.

Now they are food for a Hawk and soon an unwelcome intruder will steal the remaining bounty

We've got a lot this year for some reason.  At least three breeding couples and quite a few younguns it seems.  We've put out 6 feeders all around the property, out of sight of each other so that they can all have a chance to feed, but there's this one male that flies all around the house, constantly checking all the feeders.  But he can't be in three places at once!

Last year there was actually a fatality.  One male charged another male and I don't know why, but the attacked male flipped over on the feeder perch and just hung there.  We rescued him still alive and tried to nurse him, but of course that's nearly impossible.  He died that evening.   I don't know what happened because there were no obvious puncture wounds.  It was probably  the same bully male that polices 'his' feeders that killed him.  Can hummingbirds have heart attacks?

Wondered the same thing myself!

Nearest I can figure is a tree too close to a building.

Yeah, he's just a youngen.  Some days he sits at the back door and looks into the dining room.  Maybe I'll invite him in for a deer burger.

Oh yeah, there it is!

 What's that on the tree?

Looks like a woodpecker!

It's been a long time there, now, has it?

What's it doin' there?

Sitting!

I can see that!

If it laid an egg, it would roll down the tree!

I hadn't thought of that.

Unless it's a male.

Yes. It looks fairly butch.

Per'aps it's from next door.

NEXT DOOR?!? Woodpeckers don't come from NEXT DOOR! They come from the Wood!

BURMA!!!

Why'd'j say that?

I panicked.

Oh.

Per'aps it's from the zoo.

Which zoo?

'Ow should I know which zoo it's from?!? I'm not Doctor Squonk!!

'Ooo's Doctor Squonk?

He knows everything.

I wouldn't like that, that'd take all the mystery out of life.

Besides, if it were from the zoo, it'd have "property of the zoo" stamped on it.

They don't stamp animals "property of the zoo"!! You can't stamp a huge lion "property of the zoo"!!

They stamp them when they're small.

What happens when they moult?

Lions don't moult.

No, but woodpeckers do. THERE! I've run rings around you logically.

OOOOH! INTERCOURSE THE WOODPECKER!!!

We have between 4 and 6 mourning doves here that frequent our feeders.

Last night and this morning we had a snowstorm blow through up the east coast.

Today we had 19 doves!

That's more than I remember ever seeing at once.

They're colored differently than locals.

The ones visiting today have a more rosy colored chest and stomach area. Local birds are tan fronted.

These aren't pigeons. At least what we here in New England call pigeon.

Those are rock doves.

Interestingly enough the pigeons don't come within about 4 miles of here. They all stay in town where there's more food.

Here in PeeAaa the mourning dove is a regulated game bird that is considered excellent table fare.

Probably a lot like Quail would be my guess.

I think the only usable meat would be the breast, but the pic below shows the 'drumsticks' may have a bite or two on them, and the wings look fairly meaty too.

Hawks seem to love them!  But perhaps that is because they are slow and stupid and easy to catch.

Ever wonder why 'city folk' kept pigeon coops on the rooftops of their tenements?  People now a days presume they were keeping them as pets... ummmmm, no.

953 nut

Found this photo while looking for something.   Had a feeder that attached to the window with a suction cup, when birds landed the feeder would swing a little and tap on the window letting you know someone was eating. Chickadees loved it. Sadly the squirrels found it and had eaten a hole in the feeder one day.   :(
