Something from nothing?

I finally have the shift forks out. Someone has been in here before me.

Left to right

What's left of the detent ball/spring cap.

A boogered detent spring

A misc. woodruff key found inside

Last but not least 1 gear tooth.

I have looked on Lowell's parts page. I also looked at the rebuild videos on here. Is there not a seal or o-ring for the high/low shift lever?

You figure out what you need for parts and let me know.

I probably even got the seals and gasket for you. Shift boot.

I bought all that stuff in bulk at one point so I'll give you a screaming deal on them.

I need both outer bearings, gasket, seals, shift boot a detent spring and 1 detent ball.

I've got everything but the two outside bearings for sure. Let me double check in the next day or two and I'll PM you the info.

Is that a giant weld atop the axle pivot or just a lot of rust & gunk?

The reason you couldn't shift the transmission is because without one of the détente balls the spring was getting stuck between the spring hole and the shift rail.  Those balls are 1/4" ball bearings and are sold at hardware stores like ACE separately.  You can also re-bend that spring and it should be OK.  Do you have the stop that goes inside that spring?   The access hole in the trans case can be plugged with a dab of caulk when you are done closing the trans.  It should not be threaded and have a set screw.  You can clean out the whole tunnel for the de'tente stuff with a 1/4" drill bit.  You can probably do it by hand.  See the stop below the spring in picture.  :occasion-xmas:

I do not have the stop. This hole doesnt seen to be threaded. I assume I can just go ahead and thread it and make a stop?

DO NOT thread the hole...just a finger of caulk is good to seal. That hole is just for access, the stop has nothing to do with it.

The stop goes into the spring...keeps it straight.  If you are going to make one, it is about the diameter of a 6 penny finishing nail and it needs to be 7/8" long.  Your shifter will not work without one.

I'll bet I've got one or two of those stops as well Mike.

It had a metal plug in it. That doesnt have to be in there to hold anything in place?

No...the shift rails hold everything in place.  The face of your trans bolts to the plate on your frame.  You do not want anything sticking out...the is why the caulk.  Eric, he needs the 7/8" stop.

I think today may be frame day. I may have some questions as the day goes on.

While I have this transmission apart what can be done for upgrades to make it as bullet proof as possible.

As long as all the bearings and the surfaces that they ride on are in good condition you'd really be hard-pressed to improve on that design.

Pay particular attention to the input shaft and it's bearing set because they will be spinning the fastest.

These 8-speed 8 pinion uni drives are TOUGH.

How do I know for sure it's an 8 pinion?

Rip apart the differential which you should do anyway to clean it

That I will. So with this pic you will see the pencil. I assumed that is pointing to a pinion? Therefore I was thinking this is a 4 pinion?

You are correct that that's a pinion.

If the other 4 holes are empty you have a 4 pinion.

@stevasaurus shouldn't this have 8?
