How can I put a 120° bend in 3/4" diameter rod?

Beats the crap out of Map only or even the little Map/O2 sets!  Great for smaller stuff.  The torch supplied is small because the tanks just won't last long with a bigger torch.  But still!  Heat, braze, weld and cut!   Can't weld with a propane setup.  And brazing with acet/O2 is much easier and quicker too!  Quick is handy when you want to get on and get off before overheating things that don't appreciate heat.

 

I love mine for small and portable tasks.

Maybe something like this to weld a 3/4 rod into. :dunno: Might be stronger too. $20 from Northern tool but may find them less expensive somewhere else

Have a 30 degree milled of the top of the square section and a 3/4" hole drilled predoctoral to that angle and weld it on the bottom.

If I didn't have my Oxy/Acet torches I would either use my coal forge or I'd break down and build that propane forge that I've intend to build for years.  I really think that is today's answer to heating and working metal if it's more than one piece at a time.  Most everything it need is just a single heat but if I had a project I'd change my ways and build a small propane tank propane forge.

NAPA used to sell basically  the same thing only with mapp gas about 40 years ago. $300. Couldn't  justify  that at the time. Couple  years  later  picked up one at a yard sale for $25. Still have it. Exchange  oxygen  tank when needed...

Like the small set wallfish showed..

I learned that the O2 tanks on that setup don't last but maybe 10-15 minutes so that could get costly for a longer time use.

Yep!  But you could be a magician for 10-15 minutes!  Or a costly failure... 

Been there for both...

I can do the drilling here. 

 

Why the 30° angle?

To hit "square" from the drilled face?

 

That would be ok because I have to weld on the steering arm above it. 

The steering arm would be 90° to the vertical shaft.

You could use a shaft collar to give you a 90° angle and clamp the steering arm to it for welding.

I was going to suggest using the stub axles as well.  If that's a no go, I've had good luck with the method below.  Block 1 and the mandrel are fixed to the table.  The two blocks start off lined up next to each other, but block 2 is connected to a pivot at the center of the mandrel by an arm and rotates around the mandrel as you make the bend.  You would connect any lever needed to block 2 to prevent bending the spindle anywhere except where you wanted it bent.

Lee, what is predoctoral? Even playing machinist for 14+ years never heard that. Did you mean perpendicular?

You can make 90°+ on 1" conduits I know from experience, solid bar I can't say.

With conduit it did okay, the radius is dictated by the tool.

I always thought those had the longer / larger radius to allow wires to fee through easier, and so the pipe wouldn't crush / kink.

 

Not sure they would be good for a super tight bend, but I could be wrong.

 

On a side note, I assume making a welded "miter" style bend is not an option? Not sure how strong that would be vs a single bent piece.

We had 2 or 3 at the last place I worked they were all different , no not super tight radius. A 90° bend angle is just that ,but what is the radius on the factory spindles 1.5" ?
