Went for a walk early this morning to assess the damage from the ice storm on the trail system. Will wait for a better day to remove branches and cut up the bent over birches etc for next years firewood. Captured nice Sunrise pics too.

Well I figured after the ice storm and the on and off snow this week it was time to get on the trail system and start to open things up. This Winter was the first time I have ever pushed snow with the 417-8  with a 48'' blade, electric lift, weights and chains and can honestly say I am impressed. The snow was in layers from previous storms from hard packed, a crusty layer and then powder. It took Hi and Lo range to complete the task at hand but this thing is a beast. A first also was to take it over the Brook and plow out around the cabin. There is a grade down to the Brook and then up to the area around the cabin and figured if I did get stuck I could get the ATV and winch it out. That tractor went through that section like it wasn't even there pushing a full blade of snow. All I could think of is how cool that would have been if WheelHorse was still in business and used scenes like this for commercials to promote their one of a kind garden tractors.I believe the Ponds would be seriously impressed with us :occasion-clown:  pulling stunts like this on these simple tractors. This is where an 8 speed WH shines, set it in its appropriate gear and range and let it do its thing without abusing or straining the machine.     Have a great weekend guys.

Today would have been a perfect day out at the Cabin, outdoor fire, indoor fire, gas grille on the porch with Tips cooking, dozen or so WH's lined up

Miss getting out on the trails (ya know...wasting fuel and destroying the environment  ) So after this current 3 day rain event here in Connecticut subsided I crept out onto the woods. Everything is so very green now that we are at the end of spring and rolling into summer.

Well it's that time of year again to get started on the trail cleanup after this past Winter to get ready for the Meet n Greet in September. A little at a time makes it easier in the long run. Some of the old Pines were down in several sections and cut them up for the outdoor fire pit burning and any small hardwood was also cut up and stacked for the smaller woodstoves. Beautiful day weather wise with almost no insects which is very unusual for this time of year.

You gotta be sure to see the trails come September.

Trina and I will likely have several tractors there too.

Your trails look amazing. I'm envious. The MIL's trails haven't been touched in almost 20 years since the last timber harvest. I've got lots of work to do. At least I'll be there later in the summer. Not sure how much time I'll have after moving into the new house and doing some much needed updates.

No worries man.

You'll get it eventually.

But once you start you can never stop…skip one season and the woods take over the trails quickly!
The trails out behind my place are getting taken over, tough to navigate now.

Quite true.

Our wood gathering trails get maintained several times a year.

Out there today and realized I should have had snips with me...

The trails are pretty wild now. The blackberry brambles have closed in. Ticks are ferocious. And now we have the added excitement of the browntail moth caterpillar. The wife and MIL both had to visit their PCP for the rash.

I'm still chafing under the 10lb post-surgical lifting limit. Two more weeks, but it'll be a while before I'm out there with either the weedwacker or a bush hog. Weedwacker with a 7" carbide blade makes short work of the brambles and anything less than about 3" diameter. Not sure what my stamina will be even after I've got release for all activities. Eyes are open for a bush hog, although a lot of the trails are rutted from the logging equipment.

@Chestnut sounds like you've got some great fun ahead.

Slow and easy.  It'll get there.

Don't forget to take a day's break on July 24th.

I had completely forgotten about the 24th, but I'll mark it on the calendar. Interesting that I've been looking at a tow-behind Bush Hog for sale in Spruce Head on CL. Non-runner, looks like it's been stored under the compost pile. There was a time I would've been all over it. Less enthusiastic these days.

Finished a trail today that I started last winter before heavy snowfall and made a new one to connect to that one and other existing trails. Both of these are on the house side of the brook. My favorite ones because they are smoother and less rocky. Trying to make some new ones for regular usage and for the 2022 M & G.

Niiiiiiice!!!

Already looking forward to it!!

The BBT and I are planning on doing some opening in our own forest today.

Ours isn't the smooth beautiful superhighway system you have 😁 but it'll give us better logging and recreational access.
