Where to Find Gold Plated Connectors for the Dreaded 9 Pin Connector

Recommended Posts

RJ Hamner

Has anyone found a good source for gold plated (not the thin plated stuff) male/female connectors?

And/or weather proof connector housings?

I’m still not sure if this was under engineered, or they didn’t think the product would last this long (couldn’t envision the Wheel Horse Collector's Club)

Asking for me and a friend :)

Palladium plated connectors often mistaken for tin.

Flash Over Palladium Nickel (PdNi) Contact Plating

If Digikey doesn't list the part your looking for it hasn't been made yet no matter what part of he world you call home Digi has ya covered.

Africa
Middle East
North America

Should be a part number embossed onto the connector, search Molex .If there were alternatives such as gold or palladium offered these would show up in the product listing.

I ask myself what is the purpose of the 9-pin connector?

The only valid reason I see is Onan likely supplied the wire up to the connector with the engine. On the assembly line Wheel Horse could plug their connector to the engine and done.

If I had one that connector would be history. Splice in a jumper wire with butt connectors, solder and shrink sleeves. Stagger the butt connectors so none are next to another to keep the bundle size to a minimum and no more problems.

If the engine must come out the end of each wire has a removeable connector at the engine end.

I sot of did this very thing. I used 2 4 pin trailer connectors. I extended the wiring from the dash side of the harness and move the connection point to the other side of the tractor away from the battery acid and muffler heat.

That seems like a heck of an idea.

The trailer connectors would (in my mind) offer better weatherproofing and still offer the ability to isolate the engine wiring if you needed to replace the engine.

I mounted a 12 point compression terminal block and was able to eliminate the 9 point connector that had failed. Wires were long enough and no problems there since.

So... I got cabin fever and against my best judgement, picked up from my brother a 520H Model # 4120OE02; Serial 1033076 (1991) that he got from a Friend who claim it ran but hasn't been used in years and was in dry storage. Included was a 48-inch triple blade mower in very good condition, total cost $250 ..... I figured that even if the tractor was no good the deck was worth the coinage....... and it had a good new battery....... So got it home fixed the one flat tire, replace the cooked fuse in the fuse holder. Cranked the engine over it cough a few times and then quit, was not getting fuel, replace the fuel line from the tank to the pump, pump not pumping, replace it with a B&S pump, cranked her over and she started right up ran and idled decent with no noticeable smoke. p.s. the hour meter is disconnected but you can tell she was run hard and put away wet but overall, in fair to good condition.

So without doing anything else time for a test drive. It moved forward and backwards took her out into the yard got about 50 feet and the motor started laboring to me was like the transmission was putting a heavy load on engine, I tried to shift into neutral, but it wouldn't let me do that and then the engine bogs down and shuts off. Wait like 10 seconds start her up again and the issue repeats.... In all my years I have never had anything close to this issue hence my call for help.

I did all the normal stuff trans fluid looks clean added some 10-40 weight to top her off, did not change the filter yet as I do not have one in stock.  You can start the engine without engaging the transmission and it will run fine until the cows come home..... put it in gear forward or reverse and it will go an little ways and then the load condition occurs, the engine loads up and is dragged down into a stall.

Appreciate all your advice as this one has me stumped......

I have a 1996 520H Wheel Horse for sale.  The tractor has just over 800 hours on it.  It comes with a 48 inch deck.  The deck is a 1995 and has over 1,500 hours on it, as it came brand new with my 312-8 that I sold several years ago.  This 520-H has the swept front axle so it can handle a 60 inch deck.  I just replaced the battery and the deck belt this summer.  The engine is a 20HP Onan and it starts right up but requires the full choke.  The transmission is an Eaton 1100-062, hydrostatic.  The deck is in rough shape but the spindles appear to be in good working order.  The right rear tire has some cracking.  The original operator's manual for the 520H is included, as is the original operating and maintenance instructions for the deck, plus the installation instructions for the deck.  Also included is a new PTO belt and several miscellaneous deck wheels and rollers.  Additional pictures available upon request.  Asking $500.
