GT-14 A diamond in the rough

Ok guys. I may have found an engine. Kohler 14hp 321SA. It's in an old Case. Is this going to fit the GT? I read somewhere the "S" is for special sump. So just not sure. Also is the output shaft the same dia?

The "S" tells you the engine is equipped with an electric starter. Find out the Spec. # of the engine you are looking at and one of us can look it up to see what you are getting into.

Thanks. I may buy it either way. Also curious as to how many  lbs per sq. in the compression should be. Not looking to buy another basket case engine

Many Kohler engines can only be tested by leakdown.

The ACR prevents a compression test from working.

Thanks. Wasn't thinking the older engines had the compression release. Guess I'm borrowing a leak down tester

Not sure ALL the 14/16 engines had em.

If the engine you found is a K-321AS, it will not be a direct fit.

It would have the narrow base oil pan and use the cradle mount, like a late 70's thru early 80's Wheel Horses.

Is the output shaft the same size?

You would need the engine spec # or actual measurement to know.

Kohler made the K321AS-60410 for Ingersoll Equipment in 1983

Kohler made the K321S-60125B for Wheel Horse in 1970

The serial numbers are used to determine the year of Kohler manufacture.

Will the 60410 fit in place of the 60125B?

Not directly if it is the small oil pan, and you can't just swap pans, the base of the block is different .  Look at the pinned post in the engine forum Identifying big block Kohler blocks.  I will take a couple pics later of how i put the AS style engine on an Electro.

I just put eyes on the engine. Now I see the difference. It looks like I might be able to modify the mounting plate to make it work. Any body know if it's going to be troublesome getting the hydraulic pump off the shaft?

There is no engine plate on a GT14.  The frame rails are further apart which will make getting the drop down part of oil pan in place easier than on the Electro but may cause a slight alignment issue with your drive pulley.  For spacers I used the ones that came with K181 engines on shaker mounts.  plus 3 washers.

What hydro pump are you talking about?

The pump I am referring to is the pump on the Case mower that my donor engine would be coming from. It is mounted on the PTO side

Can't help with pump removal but you may have a bigger issue.  The crankshaft is kind of short...

Also doesn't look like it is drilled for the electric PTO

\This is the WH spec Crank

Dang. Way more than I wanted to mess with. To top it all off I haven't heard it fire yet. I think I will keep looking for a differant engine. Thanks for your time and the info.

Here is what you need to do before you commit to any other replacement engine.  Go to Kohler engine site for parts.

https://www.kohlerenginesparts.com/

Look up the spec number in question. get the crankshaft part number then go to eh manuals section here download the crankshaft reference look up the crank number and you can see the various measurements.

@pfrederi Again, thanks for the info. Looks like I may buy the Case anyways. It has a hydraulic pump on it along with a piston and valve. All useful things for future projects

@Oldskool you could just simply pop a 22 hp Predator in there... @Aldon didn’t struggle too hard with it!  :teasing-poke:

Good idea. That was an awesome build. Now I'm rethinking a few things

@richmondred01 always has some engines for sale.  Rebuilt and ready to go.

A predator 22hp swap is always fun too.  I have one on my C-161 and its great.
