In a pickle

So guys was gonna splurge on this wh 520h this weekend got permission to borrow a buddies trailor and everything. So I decided to show it to the wife and talk to her about it. She sends the link to her father to look at it comes with a garden furrow snow plow and working deck. He wants 1650 for it but ive been talking to him and I'm pretty sure hed go to 1300. Now I'm getting it to plow snow and do garden work with. Father In law says it wont plow my driveway cuz its gravel and would move it around when I'm plowing. Now I had a snow blower that would do exactly the same thing.  except throw the gravel all the way into the middle of my yard. My drive is only 40 ft long and it is gravel does anyone really think this would be a problem? He saying its not what I need and I should go to the local tractor dealer and get a newer one and have a payment on it because he said in going to have a terrible time finding parts for it but I see these 520s often in my travel of the internet. I really dont want a 12000 dollar John deere. HELP ME!!!

Parts are easy to get and this tractor will outlast the new john deere. It already has and will do it twice.  As far as gravel goes, that's what the "skids" or shoes on the plow are for. If it doesn't have them, buy a pair and install them.  You will love this tractor, I guarantee it.

A good set of tire chains, a whole bunch of weight, that thing’ll do everything you need it to!  Trust me, I’ve never had one!  :handgestures-thumbupright:

Parts aren't the problem. The biggest problem with these is keeping the herd to just one machine!

Initially we were gonna go that route and get a newer one but she talked me outta it because the older ones are easier to work on than the new ones

No offense to your FIL but he's SEVERELY misled.

Parts availability is GREAT if you know WHERE TO LOOK.

Older Wheelhorses will Outlast most modern disposable trash.

Get LOTS of weight.

Get shoes on the plow.

Re-educate the FIL...

Here on the mountain side Trina and I use her 1967 and my 1974 to plow SNOW.

Some one must have done an engine transplant. It should have an Onan engine in it. I would not let this fact stop me from buying the tractor but I would use it for leverage to try to get the price down. Like stated above, if you have a gravel drive way you will want to put some shoes on the blade so that it will not move your gravel out of the drive.

I don't think I would pay 1200 for that.  It does come with some goodies but it's been rattle canned and has a different engine in it.  Do you know the hours and hp? What else was done or not done to it.

I feel for the price you could get a better unit of you hang out here.

I don’t know what engine is on it and it appears that it had a rough life.  I wouldn’t pay more than half of the price asked.  There are unmolested tractors out there that are worth the money.

These older Wheel Horses will out work, and with proper care and if not abused, will outlast any of the newer stuff.

That being said....I personally don't see a $1300 machine there.  Amateur rattle can at best paint job on the tractor and even less care was taken painting the rims, looks like the painter didn’t mask off the tires. Is that a trash bag over the seat??

It is a 25 hp kohler. Ive been looking for a freeking uear now for something. I've looked at 4 rjs but I know those won't do it for me. i inquired about @garymus c-160 package and was willing to drive all the way to p.a. for it. Inquired today about a 314 with a loader that was sold. I dont know what it is every time I go for one its sold. And I dont want a project I want it to work on my small farm and plow and maintain my driveway.

plenty of power to do what you need.

25hp is nice but still I would still stay away.  The hood doesn't look like it closes fully and is resting on the muffler.

Someone here has got to have something to hook you up with that's decent.  C'mon fellas!!!

I agree.  My c-160 is probably my favorite. That 16hp kohler is a beast

A trash bag with orange overspray, no less!

It might be a good working machine, but for that money, you can get one that hasn't been molested like that one has. Rattle can jobs ruin it IMO. I'd rather have one with the paint falling off.. That way you at least know what you have.

I'm not sure what brand the 25HP engine is, but I'm willing to bet that it doesnt have a thrust bearing that's necessary to run that PTO. Will cause engine damage in the long run!

Hi @Willlawre

firstly :text-welcomeconfetti: to :rs:

about that pict you give us, it looks to me as a blender.

i don‘t know if the owner is here in the forum, but anyhow.

it is just my opinion about that pict i seen.

The paintjob seems to me horrible ( ok it‘s not everybody‘s thing to do that clean)

but i just have your picture as reference.

as next i see the plastic bag „cover“ on the seat, hum.... why?

additional the swaped Engine , aiaiai, as before mentioned

it looks also for me a bit loveless fuddled.

The rest of equippment mus‘nt beeing seen.

My first thought was , hey that can be a nice project, but only if you ain‘t need it immediately.

as far as it runs it could be a nice future resto project.

with a bit of love and a a bit of care, it can be later on a great Buddy in the Property.

I woudn‘t bet on that 25HP engine,

in my humble opinion this swap firstly have to be proven if it last‘s.

if so fine, but i would calculate with an Engineswap within a year.

the missing picts of the other parts i would give a max. Of 200 for the tractor,

because you cannot see, what surprises you next.

how about the tranny, how about the steering, did you do a test drive on it?

are you feel comfortable?

All switches do what they shall do? Any added switches without known function?

will the battery charged by Engine genny?

On that price he asking, everything must work in good condition and no doubts shall be up.

it‘s up to you.

@Willlawre

The tractor in the pic looks like someone found a rolling parts tractor and tossed a spare engine in to make a buck.

It really does look beat up.

If you're interested in buying a machine and doing all the maintenance yourself be sure to equate the complexity of the machine to your personal level of mechanical ability.

3 or 4 years ago Trina and I wouldn't have been able to do the things we've accomplished since, while learning as we go....

If you prefer that black front body I'd search for a 414 or 416.

The wiring is FAR less complicated than a 520.

Keep with the folks on this thread and be a little patient. They'll find you a fantastic piece.

CL and FB are ok places to search but you'll find most are well overpriced.

Lucky for you, the CT, PA, NY area has MUCH better pricing than northern New England.

For the $12 Gs your family is looking at you could easily get a half dozen horses....

Now that we are finding more uses for the 1990 520H with a KwikWay loader I am experiencing some power loss in the hydro after about a half hour to 45 minutes??????
      Ideas?

Selling my trusty WH520H.  ~880 hours (currently used for moving snow when needed so hours may rise) very solid machine, strong and hardworking.  20HP Onan, hydro transmission and hydraulic lift.  Has Matt's foot-pedal conversion for forward/reverse.  Included in the sale is a tall-chute snow blower and 60" mowing deck.  The blower is in excellent condition and is on the tractor currently.  The mowing deck has been a workhorse over the years.  No holes but could use some TLC, probably needs new spindles at some point and could use a couple spots touched up with welder also does NOT have any pulley covers/protectors (see photo).  Tractor has been an incredible tool, very solid and dependable and I'm certainly going to miss her when she's gone.

Recent maintenance: replaced the plugs this summer, fluids as needed (hydro has about 100 hours on fluid/filter; oil was done in the spring and has about 25 hours on it).  Battery is about 3 years old as are the tires, Terra Trac tires on the rear and turfs on the front.  The seat (with arm rests) isn't in great shape.  I've got a cover for the seat, never used.  It's never really bothered me but new seat cover is included in sale as are 4 hub caps, chains for the rear tires, and some misc spare parts (see photos).

I've owed this machine about 8 year and put ~350 hours on her.  She's not a show piece but could be restored.  Sheet metal is generally in shape, no rust however the hood does have a couple dings in it.

I'm only selling because I'm trying to help my son get a small lawn care business started and looking to move to a zero-turn.  The 60" deck is too large for our trailer, the mowing deck lacks pulley safety shields, and we'd like something that mows faster.  My only complaint with this machine is the top-speed (which isn't great when comparing to today's machines) otherwise she's a beast.  They don't make them like this anymore.
