What's it worth?

Hi,

 

My neighbor has a late 80's 312-8 with a 37" deck and bagger that she no longer uses.  I was thinking of asking if she would sell it.  The machine has about 1100 hours on it.  The deck is rough, but the tractor is in beautiful shape.  What's a fair price to offer her?  Thanks.  Bill

In good running condition and you don't have to travel a long way to get it, I would offer $ 400 if it what you are looking for.

So much depends on the situation here. Are you friends? Does she have another machine for mowing? Is she old? Need money?

 

If n the machine is a castoff taking up space, throw $100 (or even less) out there to see if you get a deal

 

I picked up a 312 hydro with a nice deck for $48 because it was "in the way"

300-500 would be my idea of a fair deal on something like that too, in complete working order, depending on overall condition etc.

 

I know it's tempting to try and make a steal on it, but then again. Treat others, like you would like them to treat you. Personally, I never make a deal where I really rather would not have to face the other person ever again.

Be fair to your neighbor.  Think in the long run.  If you spend 400 on it and use for ten years it is a forty dollar a year purchase.  Is that going to break the bank?  As long as she does not ask $5999.99.

exactly, I offered $45, he accepted, I had $50 and he only had $2 in his pocket. i was ok with that! :)

 As been said. Treat others as you would like to be treated. If she's a neighbour you get on with, you never know you might need her for something one day.

I gave $280 for a 312-8 from a nother member here need tires and paint without a deck. It's been fixed up painted and used since 2014.

I've only gotten out as fast as I can 3 times before a seller came to their senses.  First was a Cub Original that looked rough and had a blown head gasket but ran good and was a blast to tool around in. 2nd was an Allis /Slimplicity mid grader. Paid $100 for each and that's what the seller was asking. Both times they couldn't understand why their phones were ringing off the hook. 3rd I was disabled with my heart issue and went for a ride with my B-I-L to pick up a mower he bought at a moving sale. I spied a small york rake in the bushes complete with the drop down grader blade. I asked about it and the guy says he forgot all about it and said give me $100. I said ok and we loaded it up.

 

Heck I've given stuff away to folks at the show and here at home. Sheet metal, engine blocks, tires frames ect. Paying it back sorta.
