Listening to those pathetic horsepower numbers from that emissions era is just about enough to make one cry.  :crying-yellow:

I can remember back 30 or more years ago when I took a valve cover off of an old 305 for the first time.  If I remember correctly intake lift was something miserable like .360

It was so low that I seriously thought it was broken.

It is sad to see what GM did to pontiac through the 1960’s-80’s and ultimately in its demise in 2009.  It was a nearly dead company in the mid 1950’s until Semon “Bunkie” Knudsen was placed at the helm.  He surrounded himself with a stellar team of “car nuts”.  The architects, designers, engineers, even the promotional guys like Jim Wangers loved performance cars and it showed in their designs.  Jim was famous for saying, “you can sell a young man’s car to an old man, but you can never sell an old man’s car to a young man.”  Pontiac has previously been marketing old man’s cars—the late 50’s would change that.  Soon they were third in annual auto sales behind only Chevy and Ford...  They developed a performance image by the mid 60’s that was second to none.  Wangers stated during a talk I heard him give at GTO Nats a few years back that it was his responsibility to make everyone in the USA believe that their life wasn’t quite complete without a Pontiac in their driveway!  He was the first ad man to introduce a newly updated model by showcasing the last four years in the background.

It was so awesome to see the stuff that those guys were putting together at that time.  Things like the 1964 Pontiac Banshee concept

AA85C2CC-AF60-42B9-91AB-453C29CE254A.jpeg.7934f8559abf60bf79d6834c4b85da54.jpeg

which the General “axed” because it might put a little too much pressure on the Corvette (strange how similar the C3 looks to it🤔).

I certainly mean no offense to other brands and even sister divisions (you guys know me well enough to know that I like all musclecars, hotrods, trucks, mechanical things in general with horsepower and style😎) but Pontiac really became a performance division.  It was so sad to see what bureaucracy and politics did to them and all our American auto companies in the 1970’s.  Who would’ve ever thought that we would see the day where 200hp would make a car the most powerful us car build by any manufacturer?🤢. My wife’s minivan currently has about 270!!! I’m so glad that the last 20 years has produced the most freaky power monsters which were unimaginable in the mid 80’s.  Thanks Kevin for posting that video, it was very instructive.  Pontiac engineering was developing a genuine Hemi for several years that got chopped too9877D716-23AC-480B-96E3-12E804BBB517.jpeg.da7306a36c1fd07c2ef8f6ec3808c628.jpeg

I hate to say it guys, but I’m afraid that we are headed for a future of beige electric “Volvo’s” that do little to stir the emotions like the monsters of our auto heritage have done. Musclecars (new or old) have more passion in one body panel, in one note of firebreathing exhaust, in one sniff of burnt rubber than all the passion that these new eco-friendly (yea right-how friendly can those batteries really be?) cars can muster.  Are the days coming where the sound of a thundering v-8 rattling off the glass panes in your local downtown on a hot summer evening is a ting of the past? Will they require us to have a special permit to even own a vintage “fossil fuel” burning apparatus?  Will they regulate how often we can drive them, if at all?

 I hope I’m wrong.

Long live the musclecar!

I’ve been talking with @PeacemakerJack a bit about this car.  A friend recently purchased it from his in laws.  350 powered ‘67 Camaro SS Automatic.  The suspension is long gone and will be one of the first of many modifications.  He’s the same guy I built the conference table for a couple years back.

We are going with a QA1 front kit and Hotchkis rear.  We’ll add better brakes and a tuneup to the list.  All new fluids, etc.  Eventually, we’ll get into more power and hopefully an LS swap.  He would like to run a road course on occasion, but more than anything be able to toss his kids the keys and have them cruise SAFELY and RELIABLY.

That’s what I’m talking about.  The best memories with my car have come from making them with my kids as they have grown up...

Not sure what this qualifies as... but I found it searching for ‘29 Sedan Hot Rods.  Sure is nifty!
@ebinmaine I could see this being BBT’s winter beater!

Last week there was a news article about a Tesla crashing/burning in a Houston suburb the 2 ocupunts were killed, neither was in the drivers seat so they suspect they were playing with the autonomy’s driving capability. The fire department could not put the fire out with water and had to let the fire fueled by the batteries burn itself out after several hours.

I read about those a couple of years ago. When i was on the Hot Rod Power Tour a few years ago, one of the stops was Coker Tire. I overheard while there that they keep a set of those tires in stock just in case - they have sold one set in the past. Pretty neat stuff.

Well you said Muscle, so heres my high school truck. 1966 Ford F-250 with a 4 speed and 1 being lo-lo.  Had plenty of muscle around the farm. FCEE5545-FEDB-41ED-90E3-0F27DF820DB2.jpeg.f090422398ed92028b31d796304375ba.jpegFast forward to 1973 and dad got a new 1 ton farm truck. They didn’t offer him what the newer tires he had just put on it were worth so I got to buy it for the offered trade value. It had a barn door or cow dent in every fender and burned some oil. Being 16 years old I didn’t know anything about body work but bought a gallon of Bondo and got started. The old guy at the junkyard I got parts from kept trying to sell me an engine that someone had welded up a cracked block, swore it had been rebuilt. I finally bought it. When I cleaned the grime of the block it was a 351 Cleveland.   I can still remember the old junk yard guy laughing hard when I realized what he sold me!  As I filled each dent I painted them with red Rustoleum brush on primer. For awhile it was quite a spotted old truck.  When the whole truck was done my dad helped me spray it with Forest Green oil base Enamel from the lumber yard. (And dad made sure I did some of the spraying).    I wish I had a picture of the custom interior. It was one of a kind on a high school budget.  But that’s another story!

Maybe not a true “Hot Rod”  but that Cleveland could rattle those twin glass packs in granny gear!

Recently came across a picture of my 70 SS with a very good friends 58 Corvette taken years ago. Unfortunately he passed many years ago. He also owned other Hot rods and Muscle cars along the way. We rode dirt bikes together since we were 13 years old and been friends since kindergarten. Miss him dearly and is where my 91 520 H came from. He was the original owner and I bought that from him in 2002. That Vette was professionally restored after he purchased it.
