Non-Vintage Trucks

May as well run my truck in here. I sold my Dodge Cummins, that I bought new in 91. Drove it 26 years and just did not need a big truck anymore. I got this 2000 Ranger just 3 years ago. It was stock with 116,000 miles on  it. Been changing things on it ever since. ----- John

When I was younger, my driveway consisted of almost exactly what you owned apart from being 4wd.

 

In 2003 my dad bought a new black 03 3/4 ton 4 door short bed 2wd Hemi, and also a red 03 1/2 ton 4 door short bed Hemi. Still has the black truck and it's been excellent to him. It'll squeeze out 21 MPG on a long trip, but typically gets around 19 on shorter trips. Red truck was traded off about 10 years ago by my mother. It wouldn't get 17 on the highway on a long trip to save its life!

The red one is a ‘94 we bought used in 95.   It’s a big block with 90k miles. I’ve always had a company truck so it was only used to haul our wood for heating and pulling our camper when the kids were little. The black one is an ‘03 we bought used in 2008 once the kids got too big to fit in the super cab. It was a super low mileage truck that we found in Chicago. The owner was having trouble selling it because it was a 6 speed and I love manuals. It currently has 50k miles on it and it’s our wood truck now.

My first truck was the 300 with a granny low 4 speed. I was a dumb kid so I abused the heck out of it and it spoiled me because it took everything I threw at it.

Guess I'll add my two on here...whil they are 26 and 22 yrs old...I never considered them to be old or vintage so I think they're a better fit here.

 

First one is my 1994 Ford F150 Eddie Bauer edition, equipped with the 351 V8 and automatic transmission. I bought this truck back in March of last year as a non running unit for $1200. It went through three people owning it that couldn't figure out what was wrong with it. I replaced the ECM and have since put over 20k trouble free miles on it. It served me well until i acquired a camper last July and needed a bigger truck to haul it.

As much as I'm not a Ford guy, I would own that truck. Love that color, and there'e just something about an extended cab long bed 4x4 that I like. I know everyone loves short beds, but I'm the exception. What's behind the 460? Auto or stick?

My dad currently owns a '83 Chevy 3/4 ton crew cab long bed. It's long and doesn't turn sharp, but it'll haul anything! It runs fine, except that the 454 is pathetic due to emissions requirements. I believe it's in the neighborhood of 215 HP, and that's a lot of truck to pull around.

My 2018 3500, bought to haul both the family as well as the 5th Wheel.  6.7l Cummins, Aisin trans , Mega cab, nice little truck!

 1986 Land Rover 90. I pulled this out of a barn in the Lake District. Completely rebuilt it. Isuzu 2.8 turbo diesel with custom full width intercooler. Land Rover Discovery transfer box. Could reach 100mph depending on how brave I felt at the time. Owned it for 13 years and sold it 5yrs ago.

Thanks. It’s an auto unfortunately but I installed a Transcommand shift kit when I bought the truck to increase the shift pressure so it’s more responsive. I’m a manual guy but this was too nice to pass up when we found it for sale.

How do you like the 2.7 turbo? The thought of a 4 cylinder in a full sized truck just seems wrong.. but you can't argue with the numbers.. 310 HP and 348 Tq is pretty impressive.

It downright moves.  Not saying I’ve ever drag raced my wife with every vehicle we’ve ever driven, but her ‘11 Suburban with the 5.3 just doesn’t have it.  I pulled the dump box trailer yesterday and it seemed to like high rpm’s but with the 8 speed transmission, it was easy for it to find happy.  I don’t imagine it’s as efficient as Norman my ‘01 stick shift Duramax, but it’ll move a trailer just fine.

 

Now.  The truck was in on Tuesday for some paint protection work.  The loaner was the 6.2L in the same truck... within reason.  Wow.  Racecar.

 

 

I knew the towing capacity was 6,600 lbs, but looked up payload.  2030 lbs.  that should be good for about 5 Wheel Horses!

I figured it would be happier at higher RPM's, but it does have a good torque curve for that small of an engine. 

 

What's the fuel mileage like? High 20s?

I have the 2.7 TT V6 in my crew cab 4x4 F150 and it is a rocket. And it tows like a diesel at very low RPMs. When I pull my car hauler with a vehicle on it I never go much above 2,000 RPMs up hill or down.  I’m a big block guy so I like that.  Here’s some comparison numbers in the Ford engines in the 1/2 ton trucks.

Not super amazing... 18-23.  I’ve figured out that 55-61 or 67-72 mph are sweet spots for good mileage.  Any more than 72 and it starts going down quick.  Comparatively the Colorado got 21-25 in similar conditions and the difference in fuel prices makes it pretty much a wash.

 

I might play with the exhaust a bit and see if I can open it up to see what happens.  It’s very quiet other than the turbo whistle and I’m used to louder than that.  My 6.0 has dual 3” exhaust with straight through mufflers that are around 6” long... side exits in front of the rear tire.  That can’t ever be accomplished by a 4 cylinder I know, but I wouldn’t mind a little more rumble.

Oh wow, I figured it would be quite a bit higher than that. That's close enough to what the 5.3 gets to almost make it unnecessary. 

 

Just don't put a fart can on it :lol:
