What odd things have you made?

Hi all,

 

Spent a productive day in the workshop making a couple of moustache combs!

I have a plain plastic one and thought a nice nickel silver one might look good.

I used to make miniature knives so a bit of that skill set came in handy.

 

 

I used the horizontal mill to cut .030in slots 1.5mm apart. The top one has mother of pearl scales with gold pins. The bottom one is a straight comb for trimming the tash.

Anyone else make odd items with their skills?

I made a chess set at work for my niece for Christmas.  Used old spark plugs for the pieces and wire ends to make the tops for the big ones and J.B. Weld epoxy to hold the washers to them for a base.  Used a piece of scrap masonite for the board and tried to paint the squares but after 3 days of the paint not sticking to the primer coat I gave up and got a couple small sheets of pink and purple peel and stick felt and cut all the little squares out and stuck them down.

This shoe shelf is one of the bajillion things Trina has done/built/made around here.

Also this table.

Trina, her mom, and I  were cutting firewood a few days ago and Trina and her mom both noticed the pretty grain on a particular piece of beechwood.

 

I sliced off a piece about 2.5" to 3" thick and Trina made a table from it.

 

@JCM you'd be proud of her ....

The base is all copper pipes and fittings.

ALL cut and fitted by her.

 

Not soldered but friction fit holds it tight.

 

The base  (except the 90 elbows)  is scrap from when we removed the oil system from the house.

 

She even used recycled pipe hanger brackets from the house to hold the base to the wood top.

 

The lower shelf is a few pieces of scrap shiplap pine cut to fit together. It acts as a point of support as well as a shelf.

(That was an interesting experiment on the sliding compound miter saw. Neither of us had ever tried to join 3 things in a triangle like that. Internet search, cut some samples, learned a new skill....)

 

She sanded the base and painted it Hammered Dark Bronze.

Then sanded the top and put 3 or 4 coats of poly on the bottom, 5 or 6 on the topmost surface.

 

Trina gave it as a "just because" gift to her Mama.

Plumbing fittings? Ebinmaine Trina and Maw kettle  you didnt say you had plumber skills, What a what a gorgouse piece.....live edge wood made into anything is always so gorgouse too. Dont let yr local plumber see it, he will definately want it !!!

I have made a couple of handy helpers for working on the .

First is a dolley that can be used to remove and install a Wheel Horse transaxle without too much exertion.

The other is a clamp that will hold a shift ball to be able to remove it without damaging the surface or hold it whill drilling and tapping new threads.
