Spent a bunch of time organizing and cleaning up the outdoor workshop the past two days.

Some much needed space cleared out.

 

Got the 1267 mongrel taken apart. Needed some of that for Colossus and some for this Charger.

 

I was able to work on the Charger a little bit this afternoon.

General cleaning, a little disassembly.

A little spray penetrant.

Oiled up the hydro control.

I removed the nasty seat, bad coil, and frozen carb.

 

Any thoughts on why this is bad?

 

 

Carb and coil gone. Some surfaces cleaned up.

 

Here's the frozen carb.

I'm going to put it in the carb soak kit for a week or so and see if it frees up.

It appears to be an original Kohler carb and I'd like to save it.

 

 

Rodent hotel between the gas tank and ignition switch.

 

 

This under seat box was literally half full with nuts and seeds.

Some squirrel is really gonna be peaved when they see I have it all..

 

Seat is nearly ..... A moss farm?

 

 

Water and rust stains from the almost new seat.

 

 

 

When I get freed up again I'll take out the gas tank and clean back there.

 

I'll need to find a key and test this ignition switch.

Throw a few new wires on then see if I can find some spark.

That's so water can get in to aid with cooling! 

 

Some water must've leaked in and then it froze and split.

Should just be a standard indak key.  You  switch should have two heavy wires screw terminal and a three prong plastic push on for the rest.

 

If you need keys or a whole switch got you covered.

 

You have a new coil don't you ??

Sounds right from what I can see through the nest.

 

I'll pop it out and do some testing to make sure it works and feels ok.

Got the gas tank out and cleaned up some behind it.

 

 

 

 

Turned out the ignition switch was bad.

One of the large terminals is loose.

I peeled it and the positive battery cables out and canned them.

 

I'll poke around and see what I have in the parts pile.

 

 

 

Also removed the awesome throttle handle. Sorry @JCM Jim ... 

 

 

Mounted the new coil and cleaned up the ignition wire. New spark plug in.

 

 

Here's what I believe to be the original fuel shut off. It was bypassed many moons ago.

Ha Ha, thats OK I'm all about the OEM/ originality look, just commented about the shinny lever for trade related reasons.We are both ready for a road trip to see you guys and I really like that tractor. Another bonus is that it looks to be in close proximity to that woodstove in that nice heated lower level workshop that you and Trina created. By the way , I would rather have that mess behind the dash than the one I have on the Super A.

Yeah... I had Trina gimme a hand pulling the tractor up out of the icebox workshop because winter finally showed up.

We had to wait til now because the DEP had another test they needed to complete.

 

 

You get ready to split that Super A in the spring and be sure to invite Trina. I'll show up too.

Eric looks like it is coming a long. I been there two many times with mother nature nesting. If you can save that muffler if it is original. Hard to find these. Did you save the cables just need to be cleaned up. I have a brand new switch if needed. I was holding on to it for dream of a Start/Gen tractor. Good luck and enjoy the project.

Glad to see that you have the charger in the heated space and that you are starting to work through the various challenges—piece by piece.  It will be fun to see this tractor brought back to life and usable once again.  I “inherited” an old Cub several years back that the kids named “Davy Jones” because of its mossy/unsightly appearance.  You’d think that there was no way it would ever function, yet with a thorough cleaning and a couple of parts changed and it was alive again!  These old machines are so tough!

@Stepney believes that the muffler is off a Gravely. 

It isn't an original Wheelhorse/Nelson.

It is fairly quiet I'll leave it on.

 

I appreciate the offer for the switch.

I'd like to buy it from for another tractor.

This one is likely to be changed over to a solenoid and modern switch.

 

The cables are very badly corroded and the insulation is peeling off of all ends.

Really not suitable or safe for reuse.

That's what I would do. I don't like the thought of running that much current through a switch, even if it is rated for it. A solenoid is a far better, much less archaic setup. 

 

Coil looks good on there.. if it actually works you'll be home free.

Have you cranked it yet to test for spark?  No wiring needed jump directly to the starter motor from your battery

Haven't had time yet.

 

Clearing snow today but maybe later this evening.

 

I'll grab jumpers and the spark tester from the shed.

Great.  No points to clean no timing to adjust  simple is good. 

 

Being cold up there i would set the trigger close to the .005.  i do it on mine as they are mostly snow horses.

One of my breakerless is on loan to a neighbor he only mows with it.  I think I had it set at .006 or a bit more. Runs fine I am not sure that it makes a significant difference.  Manual really doesn't enlighten us as to why closer is better in the cold.
