AHS 1,411 #1 Posted December 1, 2019 Good morning! It happens when I start it... smoke, smoke!! Blue smoke. I have changed the oil since I have got it. How can I adjust valves on the over head cam? It is the only step I can think of.. that I can think? It runs fine it’s just when it starts, blue smoke!!

gwest_ca-(File Mod) 10,478 #3 Posted December 1, 2019 These engines have hydraulic lifters so are automatically adjusted. That should not affect oil consumption. Try cleaning the crankcase breather. It should maintain a vacuum in the crankcase when running. If the check valve is leaking the crankcase will be under pressure which can force oil past the rings and valves. ebinmaine 62,953 #4 Posted December 1, 2019 Also, be sure the breather goes back in the correct way. There may be a hole to let oil seep out. Is the new oil a multi viscosity oil? I've heard tell of others having consumption issues... But I'd run it anyways.

It right here in the picture, the tube that goes from the ohv to the carb?

peter lena 8,035 #7 Posted December 1, 2019 sounds like that smoke could easily be the neglected oil drainage ,not done before you. found 2 or 3 hot oil changes after usage really helps to flush out the crud. i also agree with AHS on the breather system , a sludge / scum build up will plug relief pressure , making it go to piston rings / smoke. take the time to open this vent system and ensure its engine pressure relief. i agree with the use of 5-30 oil over winter, i also use this ,https://www.walmart.com/ip/Bayco-SL-300-8-5-Inch-Clamp-Light-with-Aluminum-Reflector/14003467 to lightly pre heat my engines in winter, install it under the center lower techamatic point , for simple added starting ease. i also regularly use stabil in all my fuel , battery tender , for instant winter starts. i bet the engine vent hose is clogged up with oil / moisture crud . good luck with it , pete

The manual for your engine will give you the specs. We run 30 weight alot of the year and 10w30 in the winter.
AHS 1,411 #9 Posted December 1, 2019 Is this the crank case vent tube? The tube from the ohv to the carb? @ebinmaine
ebinmaine 62,953 #10 Posted December 1, 2019 I'm not positive. But it sure looks right. Pop it off and see what's inside.
AHS 1,411 #11 Posted December 1, 2019 I’ve had the carb off it plenty of times, which means the crank case vent tube... hmmm
gwest_ca-(File Mod) 10,478 #12 Posted December 1, 2019 #25 in this illustration is the reed valve. This is for 1999 so make sure of the model year in case they changed the design. https://www.partstree.com/models/73429-312-8-toro-garden-tractor-sn-099000001-099999999-1999/cylinder-head-valve-breather-model-73429-only-13/ I see it is no longer available so they must have changed something between then and now. gwest_ca-(File Mod) 10,478 #13 Posted December 1, 2019 They did change the design. This is the 2001 version https://www.partstree.com/models/ch12-5-1935-kohler-command-pro-single-engine-made-for-toro-12-5hp/head-valve-breather-3/ Garry
AHS 1,411 #14 Posted December 2, 2019 Thanks guys! I hope that it! I will change the oil, and the breather reed.👍
gwest_ca-(File Mod) 10,478 #15 Posted December 2, 2019 I would not be surprised if they had a problem where the reed valve broke off from metal fatigue. The fix was to add a second piece to limit how far the valve could bend. Usually when that happens a service bulletin is issued on the change. A servicing dealer may have more knowledge on the subject. Here is what they used in 2001. I did not compare part numbers https://www.partstree.com/models/ch12-5-1935-kohler-command-pro-single-engine-made-for-toro-12-5hp/head-valve-breather-3/ Garry
AHS 1,411 #16 Posted December 2, 2019 Yesterday, I took apart the breather tube and blew threw it, no obstruction. Today I started it... no smoke!👍 i changed the oil to 5w-30, and filter... and started it up... no smoke👍. I dunno... I guess I fixed it... on to plowing!!
AHS 1,411 #17 Posted December 2, 2019 No rest for the wicked!! @ebinmaine 😁I’m gonna be out with the plow on the 312 tomorrow. I have gotten the auger in the blower frame, and new idler sprockets... that is why I’ve got the plow!!
ebinmaine 62,953 #18 Posted December 3, 2019 Not much snow predicted down here. 4 or 5 inches... I'M fine with that !!! We're ready except for the Tecumseh in the small blower (I think) needs a coil.

I think the Tecumseh needs a Kohler👍😁
