What's to know/look for on a '49 Ferguson To-20?

Recommended Posts

My ole man has a tractor that Trina and I are seriously considering purchasing.

He's had it for nearly 30 years.

Does what repairs need to be done and does pretty well with maintenance.

Any particular areas of concern for her and I to address?

I looked it up and went.... That looks like a 9N!  Then found this post:

https://www.yesterdaystractors.com/cgi-bin/viewit.cgi?bd=nboard&th=41070

they pretty much summed it up that all engines will crack between the cylinders eventually.  Maybe it’s like that 1010 Ford I picked up... they like to run and stay running... you don’t shut them off until the day’s done.

Lots of little grey Fergies over here. Go to most shows and you'll see plenty. As for the blocks cracking. Never heard of that unless left over winter with no antifreeze in the coolant.

Go for it Eric.

:text-yeahthat:Ferguson!!! What are you waiting for? Ford and Ferguson developed the Ford/Ferguson tractor, basically a Ford with Ferguson hydraulics.  In the late 40's they split.  The Ferguson is a good tractor and differs a bit from the Ford and is not as common, but yet desirable.  Look it over just like any other type of equipment.  The engine and trans are tough but in farming conditions didn't tolerate neglect.  The 3 Point hitch is run off of a hydraulic pump and the hitch should operate up & down smoothly and be able to hold up the weight of a rear attachment, this is important.  A tractor that cant support an attachment is yard art.  These older tractor where built to last and are easy to maintain and work on, they had to be.  Most repairs would take place out in a field and would only require a small hand full of tools.  Best of luck and go for it EB!

weight of a rear attachment

I know the hydraulic system works fine because my father uses the front end loader part on a fairly regular basis but I don't think he has any rear implements at all.

How much weight should the rear 3 point setup be able to hold?

All of the weight... until it doesn’t.  I think.  :handgestures-thumbupright:

Based on my brothers 8n 3 pt will pick up several hundred pounds  (bush hog and a commercial duty back blade..  Is the front end loader running off the 3 pt hydraulics or is there an add on pump some where??  if it is using the 3pt pump you may find the lack of live hydraulics a head ache.  My brothers 8n we mounted a hydro pump in the front of the crankshaft that runs all the time to raise lower  and angle the snow plow.

I would look for something with  Live Hydraulics....

One of my father's 2 tractors does have a separate pump out in the front. I think  it's that one but I'm not positive.

Most FELs are run on independent pumps...hopefully live ones.

\What are you planning on using on the 3pt??

at this point in time the only thing I would put on the three-point is extra weight for snow removal.

As Trina and I become more self-sufficient then it goes without saying that a three-point connection would be a huge help for us.

Is there a ballast weight on the three point hitch?  Put this way most rear attachment are not light. (Heavy)  If the tractor is parked with the hitch assembly raised and it creeps down with weight on it, that's and indication of it being week.

@Herder @JCM @Stepney and others....

I think I'd have to enter this into an ugly-as-all-get-out contest.

Sure to win.

The "cab" such as it is will be removed even before transportation.

The pole on the front doesn't go with it.

It'll be a good fixer upper for Trina to putter on come spring. We'll use as is til then.

Well to some extent...

Love my father to pieces but he just doesn't do things the way most would.

Trina will get that ole tractor back to original and happy in no time...

:omg::o:text-imsorry: you will have your hands full with that one. If you leave the cab on her it could double as a hunting blind.   Once restored to original condition, I am sure that you will be very happy with the old girl.

To be honest it's really not as bad as it looks. The cab was put on probably 25 years ago and is not in amazing condition.

As much as I appreciate a good hunting blind, that one is not it.

Fugly as it sets, it is actually fully operational.

Trina is already making plans. Change this. Clean that. Blah blah blah. :handgestures-thumbupright:

Once My Honey gets her hands on it that old rig will be in much better shape.

On the plus side... Imagine the looks on people's faces when we show them the Before And After.

In all honesty, replace that linoleum with a skid and you’ll have beat @The Tool Crib to the Trojan Horse build and have yourself a big wheel!  :handgestures-thumbupright:

I hope he is paying you to take it.

That FEL is a piece of work.  Understand that an FEL with out power steering is a real work.
