Retired Wrencher 4,874 #1 Posted October 21, 2019 When you are retired you can do foolish things like this. I have the rims painted so I thought it would be cheaper to do this instead of extra set of tires and rims. I will give it a try this winter. I know LOL. 11 2
ebinmaine 62,974 #2 Posted October 21, 2019 As long as you don't have a significant other whose favorite bath towel you just stole, I think it's a great idea. 1

Sparky-(Admin) 19,444 #4 Posted October 21, 2019 Nothing foolish about taking an extra step to protect newly painted rims! Looks like a good idea
wallfish 15,911 #5 Posted October 21, 2019 I do it the easy way and just don't paint anything! No worries about any scratches or dings and no wiping anything down with a diaper. 4 1
pfrederi 17,129 #6 Posted October 21, 2019 I only paint enough for corrosion control.

Just mess'n with ya Gary. Actually, that's a good idea if you have clean painted rims. Are you gluing the rags on to the weights?
Retired Wrencher 4,874 #10 Posted October 22, 2019 Yes John using Gorilla spray glue. I had thought and said I would try it.
ronhatch 405 #11 Posted October 22, 2019 (edited) Nice paint ! I agree with you. I used to buy German machinery and work with them setting it up in our shop. They had a great saying; "It not only has to work good, but it has to look good too." How about some dense foam with adhesive on the back like they use for weather stripping? They sell pads of dense foam with an adhesive on the back at Lowes, HD, etc. Edited October 22, 2019 by ronhatch
Stormin 9,975 #12 Posted October 22, 2019 Just give the paint time to harden properly or you could get imprints off the towel.
squonk 38,846 #13 Posted October 22, 2019 I have a set of gnarly rims I use weights on. I painted the weights. Guess what? The paint came off the weights onto the gnarly wheels.
Marv 845 #14 Posted October 22, 2019 I lined mine with old innertube. worked good. weights don't wiggle. Marv 6
tom2p 2,393 #15 Posted October 23, 2019 towel or similar material might retain moisture and/or (eventually) break down therefore not ideal ? different material might be better ?
