B-80 won't start

Recommended Posts

Stephen Santospago

Hi, I'm new to wheel horse.I have a b-80 that will not start. I installed a new battery and still nothing at all. I used it last about a month ago and there weren't any problems and now all of a sudden I'm not getting anything. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

:WRS: @Stephen Santospago I'm not that familiar with a B-80, but, have you checked any safety switches that might be on your tractor?  Is the PTO disengaged?

Is the PTO disengaged?    PTO, seat, and clutch pedal safety switches can prevent power from getting to the solenoid and starter.

Check for good ground connections and no broken wires.

@Ed Kennell If his coil was original and old would that make a difference if it wouldn’t start?

Ignition switch problem?

If you place an old screw driver across the two large posts of the solenoid will the starter turn over? Image result for garden tractor solenoid

Ignition switch problem?

A bad coil could prevent it from starting, but would not prevent the starter from turning the engine overl

Yeah I made sure the PTO clutch was not engaged and I had the clutch pedal pushed down. Thank you for advice!

So a bad coil would do what? Try to start?

should he replace the coil? He mentioned that it does nothing.

If you have taken those steps and you are sure those switches were disengaged appropriately then you will need to get into some diagnostics.

Do you have a DVOM or a test light?

It would be best to have a meter that would check continuity.

OK, so you have checked the easy stuff.  Now, failure of any device in the starting circuit  or a break in any connection of these devices in the starting circuit can cause it to not turn over.

  These devices include:

the battery

the ignition switch

the safety switches

the solenoid

the starter.

Eliminate  all of these devices except the starter by jumping +12V directly to the starter post to see if it will turn over.

Ignition switch may be the problem if it’s not the solenoid. I can’t seem to remember the last time I had to buy an ignition switch or solenoid.

Suggestion guys and gals?

Thank you 953 nut, if the solenoid is bad would you have any idea where I could get a new one?

Do an orderly check of the system as ED suggested. As you go along you will find out what works and what is Questionable, we will then diagnose the things that are in question. Some times it can be as simple as a bed cable or connection. We hate to see someone buy parts the didn't actually need.

Most parts you could need can be found at a good auto parts store or Tractor Supply.
