Barbara 2 #1 Posted July 21, 2019 Good afternoon! I have two questions: 1. My husband is looking for a clutch spring for his 1987 WH. Does anyone have one? 2. Is it possible to change the spring yourself? (We suspect not.) Thank you for any help you can provide!
Sparky-(Admin) 19,284 #2 Posted July 21, 2019 Pop off the left rear tire and the spring is right there, totally accessible. You can kinda see it in my picture. I’m not a fan of “hardware store” springs as you end up with either to much or to little tension.

wallfish 15,769 #5 Posted July 21, 2019 Looks like the guys hooked you up with the info you asked for but I'm curious why the spring needs to be changed. Is the trans slipping? Jumping? squealing? ect.? Or did the spring break? Most of the time it's best to describe the symptoms the tractor is experiencing instead of guessing at parts if you're not 100% sure of the problem. It could also be it just needs a spring too. Not a bad idea to give the model of tractor as well. A 1987 212 is going to require a different spring than a 1987 312 2
clueless 2,893 #6 Posted July 21, 2019 Changing the clutch spring can be fairly easy, depending on you mechanical abilities and your tools. Most of us here assume more than we should, no matter what it's not that difficult. If you can't, it's pretty easy to find someone who can.
Barbara 2 #7 Posted July 22, 2019 First, my bad - tractor is a 1986 312-8. Recently the spring has been getting caught (see photo), and has to be released. He suspects the spring may be getting lax causing the problem. (Has happened 4-5 times in the past two years). Nothing looks amiss.
Stormin 9,975 #8 Posted July 22, 2019 Easiest way to change a spring I find, is pass a length of strong string or wire through one end. You can then pull the spring out of it's location hole and unhook the other end. Reverse to replace.

If the right hand side foot rest has been hit and has moved inward it can catch on the clutch lever and cause it to hang up. Try moving the foot rest out a 1/4" or so to see if that helps.
