Norman those holes were most likely  made by a pileated woodpecker. They are a little larger than a common crow.

This is not my photo but one I found online.

Pileated woodpecker makes a noise like you hear in a Tarzan movie. They don't seem to care if they are upside down or right side up.

That's some beautiful country! Love the view.

I've never seen anything like the holes in that tree. That bird has been busy.

They can make one of those holes in only just a few minutes. Looking for grubs and bugs.

There was another tree a lot like that one about 10 feet behind it.

Love the views. Hiking is such wonderful fun and exercise.

Now that we've gotten a few planned and unplanned spring projects out of the way we should be able to go more often the next couple of months.

HI Eric and Trina, you two never disappoint taking us on your adventures by way of your great pictures.I have a good friend of mine who lives in N.H. just off of Route 16 that owns a 250 acre Parcel that is undeveloped on top of a mountain that overlooks N. Conway, would make a nice house lot for someone. We have a resident Pileated that has a number of our Hemlocks that look like swiss cheese also. Thanks again for pics, hope you had a safe trip.

I'll bet Trina had to "fireman carry" your big arse up most of those peaks!   In fact I'll wager she RAN up those trails with you over her shoulders, a Coleman cooler full of cold pilsners in one hand and a picnic basket in the other!  Who are you trying to fool?!?!   LOL...!

All kidding aside...Pretty vistas, good weather and a couple of great companions.

Cheers!

Let me be the first to tell you that the ivory-billed (extinct cousin) does not exist in this corner of America. 😀 And the area families haven't been keeping them going for decades. 😉

:D

That bird isn't random

I chose it specific like.

Mostly because it was the first photo I came to of a pileated  woodpecker.
