greyhound 5 #1 Posted July 11, 2019 . Hello All, Have a 1987 418A , Been dreading putting in a steering shaft. From what I read I knew this could be a little rough. I took off the wheel and the allen screw came right out of the sleeve. Took the top part of the dash off with the throttle and electric items off also . Pulled the steering shaft right out from the top. Greased the new one and put it back into the mower . Took more time to get it ready to pull than the amount of time to do this job. The steering is great again. Should have done this years ago. Have a good day
Lee1977 6,211 #2 Posted July 11, 2019 If you need a new steer shaft because the gear was worn, you need to adjust the fan gear. It can be shimmed to take out too much clearance. I have also seen under size cotter pins that were bent allowing to much clearance.
