Mt Chocorua hike 5/18

Recommended Posts

Trina and I and one of our little pack of hiking friends did a nice 8 (-/+)  loop up a hill.

Here's a few pics she took...

This is a garter snake that's about 30 inches long. VERY large for this area.

Note that this cabin is right near the top.

There were dozens of mountainside hotels back in the 1800s.

This cabin marks the site of one.

These pics are in NH, about 10 miles from the border.

But there most certainly are snakes in Maine.

Perhaps he was referring to rattlers.

The timber rattler was once fairly common here but now is so rare that the state government has them in the same status as wolves and mountain lions. Sightings are occasional but so rare they aren't listed as permanent residents.

All three are most certainly here.

I've had a roadkill snake right here on my own mountain that was determined 99% to be a timber rattler. IFW wouldn't say 100% because the rattles were missing.

Trina and I have seen a mountain lion.

We've heard wolves howling up in northern Maine.

You're welcome... And yes it is.

That cabin is right at tree line in an area with some if the most aggressive weather on Earth.

The sign above the door says even though it is chained it has been destroyed once back 100 years or so ago.
