What’s in your flower bed/ garden?

Figured that this might be an interesting and good thread to start. 

My main hobby is gardening. Last year I killed one of my dear departed mother in laws roses, so this year I replaced it with a new one that I know she would’ve loved: An Ebb Tide rose.  This year it was the first to bloom and were on our second already. 

So, what’s in your flowerbed/garden?

My favorite is the bearded iris.  Grew up with them on my grandparents farm... these plants mostly come from heirloom stock that are from when my great-grandparents had that farm back in the 40s. I split and transplanted from the farm in IL up to my house in MN. and they are thriving. (these are prior years photos... they 're barely out of the ground and don't bloom until June here in this northern climate)

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Also have one delicate Fern Leaf Peony of unknown variety that was a split from a co-worker's grandparent's farm.

@CasualObserver, those Iris look amazing!!

I tore an Iris bed out last year because it had been years since it had been properly thinned. The majority of the rhizomes has bores in them anyway. I did plant the healthiest one in different spots around the house and haven’t lost one of those yet. I’ll doubt they’ll bloom this year, but I hope to be mistaken. 

 

Over the weekend the last of our Columbines opened. I have them planted in the bed below our humming bird feeders, and they seem to be doing their job of helping attract them.

Very nice. We've got some giant allium, sedum, clematis and coneflowers too but never bothered with pictures of those. Maybe have to try and remember to this year. The allium are kind of crazy looking when they bloom.  The rest is mostly hostas and daylilies, but they're generic varieties. Used to have some great specialty hostas at our last house but they stayed there! 

 

I'd like to find a nice wind-protected spot and throw in some hollyhocks too.

It's a bit early here but there's a few things poking through.

I’ve got a couple different varieties of cone flower through out the yard. Mostly intermingled with lilies and herbs.

I also have two concord and one Cayuga white grape vines. The red variety didn’t make it through the winter. Next to those are cascade hops. 

I planted  four  white peach trees that I was able to start from pits from my grandfathers tree last year as well. Next year they should start producing. 

 

@ebinmaine, those are gunna be hen buffets 😂. You shouldn’t have to worry about many pests.

I used to have a very large vegetable garden. For the last few years I’ve just planted this 30 ft flower bed in veggies. Green beans, 2 yellow squash , 1 bell pepper, 3 tomatoes, a trellis of cucumbers and some zinnia flowers to attract the bees. Sadly don’t see near as many honey bees as I used to.

I’ve noticed that as well. That’s part of why I stopped using seven dust, I didn’t realize it was detrimental to bees. 

I did put out two Mason bee houses this year, and ones been used already. I’ve noticed more around the yard (they stay within 300m of where they nest) and am interested to see if they help improve the yield of my grapes.

More of our roses are going to be blooming in the next couple days, but today the oriental Poppy bloomed, along with a few other flowers here and there. 

 

Little Miss helped me inspect the peach trees the other day. I planted the stones the November before she got here (1/19/18). 

She will probably always be the baby, and about the time she’s leaving the nest, these trees will have replacements started and will come down. Let’s see how slowly they grow now.

I’ve also been playing around with trying cuttings this year. 

I had bad luck starting from seeds, so I figured I’d try to propagate as much as I could from cuttings. So far most of what I’ve transplanted has seemed to take. 

 

Hopefully that will help fill the yard and keep the wallet full too. 😂

Here's a pic of the flower/ rock garden Trina made behind the house.

She built walls and did all the planting from various sources.

It doesn’t surprise me at all that she would’ve hauled  and stacked that stone on her own.  😂

  We don't have a very big garden, but my other half Carol has built some rockeries. Well I did most of the building while Carol supervised. They are full of stuff now as are various other places. But like Eric I haven't a clue what. I just mow the lawn and cut the hedges.

Instead of seven dust we would order lady bugs from a supplier to kill the afids. I composted alot so no chems were needed! Always had a happy garden!

I didn’t know you could do that! I’m going to look into it here... glad you mentioned it!!

 

But do you ever have a problem with them getting to prolific or ending up in the house at all?

 Funny you say that. I had no trouble at my other house but the house I’m in now certain time of the year there are thousands upon thousands of them outside the house. Not sure where they come from but yes they do get in the basement and on the TV screen at night LOL !  But I don’t seem to mind since they are a good insect to have around.

That used to happen at our lake house in the late summer (I think it was). The lady bugs would swarm inside. That was partly due to no AC and open windows. 

I used to flick the dead ones at my cousins 😂

Here in Tennessee its  usually  In October 

when we are over run with them little buggers. I have often thought of trying 

to wrangle em and sell em . Sort of maybe 

my retirement plan!

 Tell you what I’m having a problem with here is the deer population and I don’t mean the green ones either LOL! Everything a plant here becomes deer food so it’s either a slingshot or a pellet gun !

The biggest mammal that Buggs me is the rabbits. Every, single, year so far I’ve lost a grape vine to them. 

 

Them being in a residential area, I wouldn’t want to eat them, so I can’t shoot em (in town anyway). I have used Liquid Fence and it helped keep them away. They say on the bottle it works for deer too, might be worth a shot.
