Whatizit Do Over

Recommended Posts

Ed Kennell

I think I posted this one before, but I wanted to give Eric @ebinmaine and Cas @formariz a shot at it.   Please giveem a shot before you spill the beans.

This was passed to me from my wife's Grandfather along with his carpentry tools.

The scissors are for size ref.

It's a bull cinch.  You put that one end in a bull's buttocks and the other end on a fence...and it is a cinch that bull is not going anywhere.

Really ?   Sounds risky but I'll go along with it

Trina noticed fairly quickly that the straight end could potentially be inserted into the circle end so as to form a loop.

And /or...

She is thinking maybe it could be a linkage for holding something such as Horses or a wagon to horses.

The large size of that chain got me thinking. Too big for Road transportation. Something to do with boats....

Might we be wrapping this around a log so that a horse or other animal could pull it?

I am not familiar with that one. I wanted to say a chain loop sling but it looks kind of short. The other thought it came to mind would be a surveyors chain, however they usually don't look like that and you only have a section. Chain loop sling would be my guess. I am intrigued. Sometimes if you know what kind of carpentry work he did it would help.

He was a carpenter, but he was also was a goat dairy farmer that used mules for powering his equipment.

I'm  going for dinner....no more clues for an hour.      Keep guessing.

Now we may be getting somewhere. He probably had a thread mill operated my the mule. Then that short little chain would tie the mule to the front of mill. The way ends are set up it would be quick to engage or release on the mule or mill.

That would match up fairly closely to Trina's thought process which is certainly in the lines of an animal pulling mechanism.

Lets see what he says, but i am thinking that I am correct??? Basically the most useful mule powered equipment in a dairy far would be the thread mill that could power a variety of operations. The fact that he was also a carpenter, he could build it himself, customize it or repair it. The chain is also too short for basically all other operations and does not show any wear signs. It just hung there since mule would not go anywhere it would just basically keep it from moving its head to the sides. Thought it may also go across mill behind horse but it looks too short for that.

Normally you provide excellent pictures, video, detailed references to owners manuals and parts etc...

Could we get such documentation, video etc. of you demonstrating the appropriation insertion technique, angles, type of lubrication (what viscosity) etc...

I'm not exactly sure that's the type of knowledge that I would like passed on to myself

Folks, Ed K is having issues posting, as are others.

@nylyon Karl is working on a fix.

Note from Ed from another thread:

Eric, @ebinmaine  I get notifications that you have responded, but I can not post a response on the Whatizit thread.       Please post this on the thread for me so Cas, Dave and others know there is a problem posting.

Other members are having problems and Karl is working on a fix.
