Cadmandu 67 #1 Posted April 17, 2019 Hi all How do I remove the strainer screen under my tank beside the the shut off? thanks
JAinVA 4,619 #2 Posted April 17, 2019 If you are talking about the screen part in the tank and don't have long needle nose pliers then you will have to pull the fuel shutoff out.It takes some effort but it will pull out of the rubber grommit
Cadmandu 67 #3 Posted April 17, 2019 Thanks for the reply. Do you mean that it just pulls out why wouldn't leak?
The Tuul Crib 7,332 #4 Posted April 17, 2019 (edited) There is no screen on the shut off valve that I know of Edited April 17, 2019 by The Tool Crib
richmondred01 2,205 #5 Posted April 17, 2019 (edited) Some of the valves do indeed have screens. The screens can’t be removed. Buy a new valve and grommet. They are cheap Edited April 17, 2019 by richmondred01 3

JAinVA 4,619 #13 Posted April 17, 2019 When you get the replacement install the grommet first.Apply a little grease on the shut off below the screen area and install with a twisting motion.
Cadmandu 67 #14 Posted April 17, 2019 I'm actually fighting a slow startup only when cold. I'm hoping to find some simple solution. Can you take out the mechanical fuel pump and clean it with any luck.

Ethanol in the fuel slowly builds up on the brass screen (on the petcock) this is what also clogs the small passages in the carbs, it turns into a brown hard mineral like substance. It not necessarily actual dirt that is building up in your fuel tank...and it's always wise to use and in line (paper element) fuel along with these screens.
Cadmandu 67 #16 Posted April 17, 2019 Does using seafoam in the tank help
JAinVA 4,619 #17 Posted April 17, 2019 Like Jeff says ethanol free fuel is what you need and the only stuff I use in the air cooled engines.I would use it in the bigger tractors but it cost to much for what they burn.I recommend Sea Foam as a cleaning additive.I add some to the fuel and I'm sure some others use it as well.

richmondred01 2,205 #20 Posted April 18, 2019 As for fuel pumps. The older aluminum ones I rebuild because I still have several NOS Kohler kits for them. If it has the plastic newer style, I don’t even waste my time, they are inexpensive so I just put a new one on and trash the old one. I buy them in bulk like the fuel shut off valves, transmission rubber boots, fuel filter, air cleaners, carb rebuild kits, points, plugs condensers, and gaskets. These items, like predator engines, (ha) are expendable items and get tossed.
