32 in rotary mower tear down

I have a 1962 32" rotary mower that I am pulling apart for a restoration but I cant seem to get these bevel gears off. Any help?

Yes they are a bit of a press fit. Careful, the shaft looks like it is getting peened over.

Try slamming that end of the shaft straight down on a block of hardwood. When the shaft comes to an abrupt stop the gear may keep going. There is a Woodruff key between the gear and shaft but the gear should slide off of it.
