Snowthrower question

Recommended Posts

608KEB

The tall chute snowthrower on my 520H  will twist the kotter pin and disconnect from the lift rod.  I've  also used  kotter keys with worse results. Has this happened to anyone else? I do have 2 washers on the end of the lift rod. Adding maybe 1/8 of a inch to the total length  of the lift rod.  I've  never had a problem  with the short chute snowthrower  that I have hooked up to my B100.

Lost a few until I discovered the pin should be a 3/16" cotter pin used with a 5/8" SAE flat washer.

Had to ream out the rust to get the 3/16" pin in but no more failures.

A spring pin in this application gets pushed out too easy at the worst times.

I  had the same problem till I drilled mine out for a 1/4" Stainless Steel bolt and Nylock nut.

Thanks for the replies. I used a washer also. I'll try the 3/16" pin with a new washer first. If that doesn't  work. I'll  drill it out to a 1/4". We're  supposedly  getting  some snow here. Starting tonight!

I actually had my short-chute pull the lift rod off the pin while in use because the washer I used was 3/4 instead of 5/8... the cotter pin was still in place, but mangled... apparently proper hardware is key at this connection!

in addition to the replies above, I have found FENDER WASHERS  to be a great help ,   https://www.homedepot.com/p/Everbilt-1-2-in-x-2-in-Metallic-Stainless-Steel-Fender-Washer-2-per-Pack-800541/204284504   , you can get these at your local hardware store , in the pull out slide tray area. found the extra coverage along with lubrication ,made my lift rod to hook up a non issue , pete

hiding in plain site, 608keb, that 4x4 that your lift rod is sitting on is the perfect mount to put under the rear edge of your thrower . I found that hooking it up to front , TECH A MATIC first ,holds it in place , putting it on that 4x4 makes  the lift rod hook up very easy.pete

IMHO, the best thing to use in these snow throwers are 3/16" lynch pins or PTO pins...you can pull the loop over the rod before "locking" on the pin just like the rear hitch lock handles for the snow plow, Jeff.

I'm all rigged up. 5/8" washers, 3/16" Lynch pins, 3/16" pin, 3/16" bolts n locking nuts. I'll try them all! Bring on the snow! The old pin was smaller. I also used 3/4" washers prior to today. It was all I had at the time. Hopefully the new hardware will work!

The smaller 5/8 washer will need to shear the pin instead of allowing it to bend like the 3/4 did.

I think the SAE washer is the key.

5/8" SAE flat washer has 1-5/16" OD and 21/32" ID

5/8" USS flat washer has 1-3/4" OD and 11/16" ID

Had a 3/16 SS one on it but same thing. Don't know which washer I was running as is lost. Thanks for the tips guys.

So should I use one 5/8" washer or two washers?

Start with 1, IMO that lift rod needs to "float" a bit on the housing stud.

:text-yeahthat:   The lift rod must be free to move on the pin when you lift the blower

I'm sending some down your way! News 27 says you guys are supposed to get a little less than the central part of the state. Don't look that way on my radar tho!

I used the 520H without a problem today. One 5/8" washer and one lynch pin. I got some seat time today. I clean off 2 other driveways also.:eusa-whistle:

You pick up, as I cannot deliver.
Lot's of fun to clear a sidewalk in one pass or driveway in just a few.

I have the manual, belt and attachment parts that go with it but are not pictured. All are in good working order.

So long story short I scored a two stage snowthrower for my 520xi in the off season and hooked it up to my tractor and finally got a chance to use it this past weekend after we got a storm that dumped about a foot of fresh now.  First time out everything was going good and the snowthrower was moving snow like a beast, I did notice though when I got to the berm at the end of the road the blower would shake and vibrate pretty good when going through it.  I thought it was just normal operation since the snow tends to be more compacted from the plow, I just made sure to go nice and slow when I got to the end of the driveway and was able to clear my driveway and the neighbors without any issues.  Fast forward to the next day and I fired up the tractor to clean up the driveways as we got another couple inches over night.  Was able to finish my driveway but halfway through the neighbors when clearing the end of the driveway the blower shook and the suddenly stopped.  I shut it down and looked around and noticed the belt was broken, I didn't think too much of it as when I put the blower on the tractor the belt was showing some wear but when I saw how expensive the toro belts are I decided to run it as it looked like it would make it through another season no problem.  Once I got it back in the garage I removed the belt and that's when I noticed that something didn't seem right, the spring loaded pulleys on the right side of the pulley box were hanging below the blower frame, I took the chain and belt cover off the blower and noticed there's damage to the main belt pulley on the blower as well.  I pulled the pulley box off and noticed that there's groves worn into the metal from the pulley and what looks like some belt rub.  Anybody have any clues on what caused the belt to fail?  I'm including pictures to hopefully give some clues to those who have used these blowers extensively.  I followed the manual while installing the blower but I'm wondering if maybe I don't have something assembled correctly or am missing some crucial part.  I'd really hate to spend the money on a new belt only to have it blow because I didn't correct the actual issue.  I will say all the bearings seem tight on the blower and there doesn't appear to be any play in the shafts.  I look forward to any insight you guys can offer, thanks.

I picked up a used single stage that has been sitting.  The auger spins, bit things need a little TLC.
What chain lube have you found to work best, and last longest?
Any lube needed on the bearings? Or just replace if stiff?
      Thanks!
