Recommended Posts

Hi ,

Does anyone know where to buy the right length cables for a 1961 401 suburban? Mine are seized up.

Thanks, Bob

Here is another source.

http://www.psep.biz/store/toro_mower_cables.htm

They will need to be trimmed to length, which is quite easy to do.

Bob I only have one here and it's got a crease in it.

Both above sources should be good for you.

I ordered a set exactly like those off of eBay for my 701 and they look great.  Only one drawback, no way to lock the throttle to keep it on place.  I like the idea someone else said about pulling the sire out of the sheath and kinking it a little to give it a little resistance.

Seized up or frozen from water inside?

If frozen warm them up and soak them in antifreeze. You can cut the Z bend off and pull out the wire. The rust on the wire easily attaches to the ice so clean them up, gease'm and re-install. :twocents-02cents:

Seized. Is there a product I can soak them in that will desolve the rust?

Cider vinegar. It should work overnight.

@wallfish has a good idea there. You really should be able to carefully separate your existing cables if they are all solid and look okay. You should be able to reuse them.

Patience is your friend.

I have lots of patience. They can soak in vinegar all winter if needed.:) Thanks

Is there a tool to put a new z-bend in the wire?

2 pair of pliers works for me, hold the wire with one bend with the other.

It's always hard for me to get the center part small enough

I agree with that.

Get a pair of decent quality needle-nose vise grips to hold the end of the wire at the end of the vice grips about 3/16 of an inch from the end

you can then use another pair of pliers in addition to a hammer to create the Z bend around the parts that is gripped in the needle nose pliers
