Hi Guys,

I have a ‘91 520h that sat for a couple of months and was working fine. Now it won’t turn over with a new battery by the key switch. I jumped the starter directly from the battery and it turns over. It doesn’t always engage the pinion though.

I checked the blue wire from the key switch to the starter solenoid. It shows just under 12v when key is off and no voltage when key is in start position. Is this correct?

Also, the PTO switch light on the dash lights up when in start position as well. The all the safety switches were overridden when I bought it. No fuses either🙄. That’s my next project.

Need to get this baby going... Expecting 1-2’ of snow tomorrow night!

Since the previous owner hacked the thing, anything is possible.  That PTO light coming on usually means that the PTO lever is on or the switch has a problem.  The voltage at the starter sounds like a bad ground.  You need to download the demystification guide and then you can see how each system works.  https://www.wheelhorseforum.com/files/file/10-demystification-guide-1985-2001-492-4509pdf/

Hi Guys,

Sorry for the delay in responding. Was working a 24 hr. shift and a bit busy with the storm. I tested the starter relay this am and it’s junk so I’m picking one up later. Will update. I’m sure, given my luck and leaving the key on for a couple of hours, the ignition coil is junk. The primary had a good reading but the secondary is open so I’m pretty sure it’s trash. Already ordered a new coil to have on hand. I’ll update with the outcome.

      Hey Guys - glad to be here and this seems like a wonderful site.. Just joined and just picked up a B-112, not sure which year but trying to get it going.. had been sitting in a barn for 20 years I am told. Seems to be a kill relay issue. I can hear it clicking but nothing to the starter. I would like to obtain a parts manual and would like some advise on where I can purchase quality restoration / repair parts in the Norwalk / CT area. Any ideas? I can head to a local Toro dealer, but if there are specific sites you all regularly use for replacement parts, particularly for electrical and NOS items, I'd really appreciate it. Thank you for your help.

      So first and foremost , I'd like to take the time and thank anybody and everybody that is able to help me with my issue! I have minimal electrical experience and I'm having issues finding any prints  or diagrams for this 108 - 5 Wheel Horse. I recently just bought it and brought it home to try to get everything working properly. The gentleman I purchased it off of was jumping the battery off of the solenoid to get it start. Which it started up but it didn't move forward or reverse,(because one of the belts were off.) I brought it home to my shed cleaned up everything as best as I could make sure the belts were on properly and they weren't loose or dry-rotted. And I went and bought a new ignition switch. I assume maybe that the switch was bad but further in depth I feel that the original switch was fine. So my next step was I move forward to the solenoid I marked where the wires were on the old solenoid replaced it and it did the exact same thing. It would blow the little small 15amp fuse link right to the right of the solenoid that has a black with orange striped wire that goes from the ignition switch to this fuse link. And from the fuse link it goes to the left side of the solenoid.
      I've come to conclusions that the coil itself may have had a short in it because when I unplugged the coil the fuse does not blow. And I am putting a 15 amp fuse in and as soon as I turn the ignition on it blows the fuse. Any help possible would be greatly appreciated!

      I'll first start out by saying that I might be going outside my skill set to even think of tackling this but I've had some recent success with other issues so here goes...  The electrical system on my 520H.  
       
      Issue #1   This winter I attempted to hook up some LED's to my cab.  The LEDs along with my headlights started to blink on and off with every bump and then finally went out.  The taillights come on fine, but the headlights are still out.
       
      Issue #2  The seat safety switch.  Sometimes doesn't register that I'm on it and won't start.  I've been sticking a long nose screw driver down to push in the switch under the fuse box and it will start and run fine but as soon as I climb off (while in neutral and PTO disengaged) it shuts the tractor off.
       
      Issue #3  This is the big one that I really need to figure out... I can't get it to start without jumping the battery.  Once jumped and started it will run fine until I shut it off.  Then it just gives me some clicks and nothing.  The auto parts guy tested the battery and said it was fine, (it's only a year old) I cleaned the battery terminals, it has new plugs, the fuses appear to be fine although I have been reading about the need to replace the box with individual weather-tight fuses.  (The 9 pin connector is also starting to crumble and is now on my to-do list)  What or where should I be looking?
