Suburban Serial Numbers

Recommended Posts

BHunter

Today I pulled the I’d tag off my 61 suburban. Cleaned it up and was able to barely read the numbers. It says 43810. It doesn’t seem to be stamped or engraved  as deep as my  1960 . I saw there is a database for the 1961s but I didn’t see one for the 1960s. I was wondering if there is one for the 1960 model? I read somewhere that wheel horse cut the I’d plates that were used on the 60s . It’s true, they cut through the letter C on this one.

There are 2 lists for 1961. One by model number and one by serial number so members could see how they were produced.

Did the 43810 cover up the 29068 or whatever it is?

Never heard of them being cut. What was the reason?

If you see a SN in the file name there are serial numbers added.

If you see a sn in the file name there are none yet. (If I've done it correctly)

Me either and have had quite a few 1960 tractors over the years.

I'm confused. Are you saying that cut ID plate is from a 61?

July 2013 @CasualObserver wrote this.

Suburban serial locations. (These are the general locations... some may vary occasionally.)

1958/59 RJ-58 - left frame rail just behind the hood.

1959 RJ-59 - As far as I know of, no one has ever documented finding one.

1960 Suburban - Stamped into the metal throttle/choke plate just under the upper screw.

1961 Suburban - early used the top section of the 1960 plate, cut off and screwed to the hood stand.

1961 Suburban - later used a decal on the right frame rail ahead of the foot peg.

im saying that my 61 has a cut plate that matches my 60  full length plate. I laid it on top of my 60 plate and the C for choke lines up together.

Hi Gary,  I found the SN file. Do the serial numbers on the list  represent the tractors that are owned by Red square members?

No it didn’t cover it up. The plates are from 2 different tractors I own.

Thanks for the info,

Bob

OK, that's legit, I remember reading Jason's original post now.

Pretty sure I have at some point, seen one of these cut tags factory applied mid point of the right side of the hood stand.

May have saved the pict, will have to look.

That’s exactly where I found my 61 tag.

I find learning about the history of these tractors interesting. I found it cool to discover on my tractors what another member wrote about.

This fourm and the people on it are great.

Thanks. I bet you’re right . This 61 is pretty nice. It even came with a plow on it. The transmission was locked up on it when I got it. Me and the previous owner had to pick it up and put it in my truck. It bounced around in my truck bed for an hour and a half on the way home, and the trans got unstuck. I changed the fluid and it works good now.

The 551 I am rebuilding has a cut tag just as pictures above and it was on the right side of the hood stand.

Somewhere on here i read that the though was the Ponds had leftover tags from 1960 so being frugal as they were, they cut them to use on the 1961, 551's

Well the "New-to-me" 1960 400 Suburban throttle/choke dash plate that mentioned an ID serial number is way too recognizably gone. :(

@AMC RULES I noticed that your 1960 "400" pictures had a belt guard plate. None of the manuals that I noticed referred to that part. I like yours!

Long before Red Square existed I started recording any serial numbers I came across. Has been an interesting process.

Is the number 29068 and what model of tractor?

I admire your passion and dedication.

The number is 29060 . It’s a 1960 400.

I also have another 1960 400 , I’ll get

you that number after I get home from work.

Thanks, Bob
