I know what you mean, but with the price of diesel fuel at $3.10 a gallon,I'll probably use a little discression when using the equipment.I'm sure there's a reason that excavator has a 66 gallon fuel tank.I've got a 12 inch capacity Vermeer wood chipper that has a 300 cu in Ford 6 cyl engine. When it's working hard,it uses 5 gallons of gas per hour. All this equipment can do a lot of work, but they cost a lot to run.

I see a D3C in those pictures. I’ve spent many, many hours on one of those, it’s a great little finish grading machine. I also remember some of the coldest work days of my life on one which was not so enjoyable!!

...and even more to maintain properly...I think I heard all the guys that posted saying good luck with that Pete..:)

I have replaced my share of roller frames in the day on these machines and they weren't exactly free. Then there's hydraulic hoses that bust and batteries! It's not unthinkable how the pros charge 300 an hour for these guys.

'Course there's always side jobs to help out with that?? Maybe the guy down the road needs a ditch or a pond. These beauts were built for one thing and one thing only...to make $$, be it a utility, highway contractor or small time excabator. No typo, that's what my boy called his toys when he was two...he couldn't pronounce the v!

I’ve been around heavy equipment my entire life. My family had an excavating business,I remember we had a cable operated D7. As a little kid riding on that thing( the seat was the size of a love seat!) and loving it. The operators maybe not so much!! Anyway I do remember that they all break eventually, so this is why some guys do charge $300 an hour. If a dealer mechanic has to come out they are getting $200+ an hour. They definitely don’t run on “thanks”!
