Update on Scottie...

 

It has been a while since I last updated you and a lot has happened.  After our little trip to St. Mary's emergency room on the 6th of January, we found out that he had a blocked suprapubic catheter and the urology medical team wanted to see Scottie on Tuesday (01/08) as an outpatient to change his catheters.  I was a little skeptical as what the medical team was planning on doing on Tuesday, was Scottie going to tolerate this procedure without being put under, or was he going to require surgery?  We arrived to his appointment on Tuesday, Scottie was in severe pain from just traveling over to Rochester, that any other movement or transfers was going to send him over the top for his pain.  Please keep in mind that he was very medicated before we left home.  Once we got into the room, Scottie had to be transferred onto a table in which made him cry out in pain, and he needed to have his bladder full of normal saline in order for the two urologists to change out both of his catheters.  Well, the nurse started to put in the normal saline solution to fill his bladder, and he only put in 30 cc out of 150cc and Scottie was screaming so badly that I told the nurse to stop and to go and get the doctors and let them see Scottie like this.  The doctors came in and stop the procedure and scheduled him for surgery instead, because they did not want Scottie to be in so much pain.  We were sent home with a surgery date of Thursday (01/10).  

 

Lowell, and I got Scottie all ready to go and into the truck and off to St. Mary's for his catheter change.  The urologist was uncertain if we could replace the suprapubic catheter and be able to drain it like before since he was unsure of the placement of his bladder.  We were told that if he was unsuccessful with the suprapubic catheter placement that our other option was to drain the bladder from his penial stent.  Not the option that Scottie wanted nor did Lowell or I want.  The surgery was to last for about 30-45 minutes once Scottie was put under, much too Lowell and my surprise 30 minutes later Scottie was out of surgery.  The urologist came out and talked to us about the procedure and told us that he was able to replace the suprapubic catheter and the urethral stent without any complications.  He was also successful with allowing the suprapubic catheter to drain his bladder.  We also were told that Scottie's bladder was high in his pelvis after the accident on 12/12/2018, but after the scan on Thursday 01/10/2019, he was able to see the bladder returning to the normal location.

 

Since the surgery, Scottie has been in pain from the bladder spasms and from any type of movement.  When he has a bowel movement, it causes pressure and he strains (not intentionally) and it triggers a bladder spasm.  We were told this week that we are looking at two more surgeries from the urology stand point.  One for another catheter change which will be two months out and the second surgery will be for the bladder and urethra reconstruction which will be three months out.  Providing that we don't have any other complications that arise between now and then.  

 

We go in on Friday for his orthopedic appointment to check on his pelvis and his other fractures.  We will find out if his hardware needs to be in permanently or if he will need it taken out.  

 

Will he be there for the Big Show in June?  I truly can not say for sure as of yet.  All I can tell you is that Lowell and I are planning on him attending but we will have to see how Scottie is doing then.  

 

Scottie is one spoiled little boy by the Wheel Horse guys in Wisconsin.  Thanks to WHX21 and others, they made Scottie's day!!!  I love to see him smile!!!!

It always hurts me to see a child in pain, and I am truly sorry for his predicament. Hopefully, this last procedure will help Scottie.  As far as the big show is concerned, it would be great if he is well enough to attend, but if not, there is always next year. Once he is beyond the urological problems, the rest of the body will heal quickly at his age. You, Scottie and all your family are in my thoughts every day.

It's odd that that when you asked us to make him smile that Cindy and I were mere blocks away from the Packer pro shop at Lambeau that day on other business and we could swing in and pick him something up. I personally am taking that as God's will in looking over us. Sides nice to know there are Packer fans out there other than the @squonk. 

We hope he enjoys our meager trinkets. It is truly sad that a man of his age should have to go through such things as this and we will continue to pray. 

BTW to heck with the BS I hear tell you guys might be attending a show here in WI in July?? Might be a good time to run him up to Title Town for a field tour? My offer to a real game still stands as well .....

Well, rats. I was hoping for some more forward progress, sounds like that is not really the case. Given his age, I'm sure he will return to normal but during that time we're glad to help in any way possible - just say the word. Anything, however small or large that we can do to help is on the table, just looking for ideas here.

As mostly county's not allways straight, healing process will be sometimes also an up and down.

As long as the Up's are the more, he will be growing, even if it is slow.

Massive injuries as he had, take their time for healing.

As far as the Sourrounding is well, i'm sure Scottie made it.

 

Scotty is allway's included in my Prayers.

Update on Scottie:

 

Yesterday, we had Scottie's 6 week follow up appointment with his orthopedic team and surgeon.  Going into this appointment, Lowell and I had several questions about Scottie's pelvis causing him pain and if he was going to be requiring surgery to fix his pelvis.  Scottie had several x-rays done yesterday for his clavicle and shoulder, his elbow, and of his pelvis to see how he has progressed since the accident.  Once his medical team had time to review the x-rays and compare them to the original ones that were taken the day of the accident, they came to see us.  This is when Lowell and my questions about Scottie's pelvis and whether or not he will be requiring more surgery to fix his pelvis were answered. Scottie's x-rays showed new bone growth and calcification where it needs to be.  Scottie will not be requiring surgery to fix his pelvis or his clavicle and shoulder.  That is correct NO surgery to fix his pelvis or clavicle and shoulder.  We found out that Scottie's pain is from his bladder and the two catheters that are in his bladder. As for Scottie's elbow, he will be requiring surgery to remove the three plates and screws 6 months to a year from initial surgery date.  The reason for the removal of the hardware is because he has limited function of his right elbow and arm.  We also were told that the next step in Scottie's recovery is to start physical therapy twice a week, to take all weight restrictions off of his upper and lower left extremity and to be off all pain medications in 6 weeks.  We are glad to know that Scottie's fractures and breaks are healing according to plan.  If we only had to worry about his fractures and his broken bones and nothing else, the plan set forth from his orthopedics team and surgeon would be wonderful but Scottie also has his bladder and urethra problem.  Understanding the next orthopedic step for Scottie, I made a call to his urology medical team and informed them of the news and next step in his recovery per the orthopedic team.  I was informed that we had to hold off of his physical therapy until his entire medical team can meet next week and discuss the best plan for Scottie and where we go from here.  The reason for this meeting, is because Scottie had a major setback with the bladder infection and the catheter being blocked and requiring surgery to replace the two catheters, and that everything has been pushed back until he can be where he needs to be from the urology standpoint.  

 

Scottie is still experiencing pain from his bladder spasms and the two catheters.  As long as he has the catheters in his bladder, he will continue to have pain associated with that because his bladder is attacking the catheters and wanting them out.  He experiences bladder spasms frequently and when he gets one he has this painful build up of pressure and then he urinates around the urethral stent.  In talking to the urology team, this all normal during a bladder spasm and that does not mean that urethra is connected to the bladder or that he will have full function of his bladder, it just means that his bladder is active.  When he has a bladder spasm, he requires his pain medication until we can get his pain under control.  Scottie has started homebound school and he works on his assignments (1-5 questions a day) until he gets a headache.  Some days he don't do homework because he has a migraine from his traumatic brain injury.  We are very fortunate that his teachers want him to get better and maintain his baseline and not worry about new material.  Lately, Scottie has a loss of appetite because of the pain he has been experiencing.  He is allowed to have protein shakes and whatever he would like to eat.  

 

Scottie loves his cards and packages he gets in the mail.  He would like me to say thank you to everyone who has sent him cards and packages.  He really lights up when I tell him that he has mail...he looks forward to that and not to his homework.  There is the latest package Scottie received...thank you Karl!

Glad to hear that no surgery is required on the bones - that leaves out any potential problems later and that's a good thing. That elbow will take some serious therapy work, but he's proven he can take the punishment for sure - he's shown he is one tough kid. Great to hear the packages/cards are helping his spirits - it really is the little things that count.

Update on Scottie

 

Yesterday, Scottie had his fourth surgery since the car accident.  This surgery was to replace his two catheters and to see what the next plan is for his recovery. We had some questions and concerns about him being able to pee normally or if he has to have a catheter the rest of his life.  We were told that everything is fixable it just depends on what the course will be.  I could see the weight being lifted off of Lowell and Scottie's shoulders and the anxiety lessen for Scottie.  Scottie was taken back into surgery to replace his catheters a second time.  His procedure was a success and he has two new catheters.  We were told after the surgery by the surgeon that Scottie will be in pain for the next few days and that his urine will be a punch color.  We were informed that his reconstructive surgery will be happening in April sometime.  We asked our questions and got some of our answers and we are waiting on clarification on the others.  We were taken back to see Scottie anticipating him to be sleeping or resting and much too my surprise Scottie was awake and in pain.  Once his pain was under control, we were able to go home and we were back home about 12 pm.  After we arrived home, I went into the house to get Scottie's bed ready for him, when all of sudden I heard the door open and to my surprise it was Scottie walking in with Lowell helping him.  Seeing Scottie walking was a big accomplishment, but also it took a toll on him. 

 

About 1:00 pm, we received a phone call from the resident who was in on the surgery, and he informed us that after looking at the images that were taken during surgery that he had some good news.  He stated that we needed to come back to Rochester and have his penial stent catheter removed and in 6 weeks we go back to have his supra-pubic catheter replaced and more imaging done to determine when reconstructive surgery will happen.  Well, being that was something totally different than what the surgeon originally told us, I called and spoke to the surgeon.  After talking to the surgeon who has been on his case from the beginning, I found out that his penial stent will stay in and that his reconstructive surgery will be delayed.  The reason for the delay is because they need more scar tissue and urethral tissue to form before they consider the reconstruction surgery.  The gap between the bladder and urethra is 2 cm and they would like the gap to be smaller.  I was also was informed that Scottie needs to start standing up by the edge of the bed and that he needs to start a home exercise plan to help with his anxiety.  

 

Scottie has had some issues in controlling his bladder spasms and his pain that is associated with having two catheters in his bladder. He has issues controlling his anxiety when he is in extreme pain, but the medical team has switched around his medications to help with the bladder spasms and pain.   

 

Bryan is doing well and he talks to his one teacher weekly about Scottie and how he is feeling.  Bryan is focusing on his school work and his graduation in May.   Please continue to pray for both of the boys and our family as we continue down the long road to recovery with Scottie and Bryan.  We want you all to know that we appreciate all the thoughts and prayers.  Thank you for keeping us in your prayers and thoughts.
